4.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Continent !!!, 9 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The phrase the Dark Continent is hardly what we'd use to describe Africa these days, and admittedly Waugh never actually uses it either, however this book is from a such a time. Not exactly politically correct by our standards today, but for Waugh's day perhaps he was rather liberal compared to some.
A very interesting and entertaining read, even though it is off a journey in the 1930s and a truly different age. Waugh does give give fair discussion to some of the issues about colonialism and Africa, especially Kenya. The best part of the book however is the coronation attended in Ethiopia - bizzareness of the events combined with Waugh's sheer snobbery make it a hilarious read. If you enjoy Waugh's literary style, humour and works you'll enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic.., 16 Jan 2013

This review is from: Remote People (Penguin Modern Classics) (Paperback)
This book is fantastic! It covers Waugh's journey to see the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie in the 1930s, then his long and tough trip to get back home to England afterwards.

Evelyn describes the journey vividly and tells a range of amusing travel anecdotes. The only shame is that he did not visit more of Ethiopia..
