5.0 out of 5 stars HEART-WRENCHINGLY, TEAR-INDUCINGLY GOOD, 27 Mar 2012
This review is from: Selected Poems (Penguin Modern Classics) (Paperback)
Penguin is not always brilliant and works in translation. More often than not translations continue to circulate from decades ago which seem stilted and academic. Poetry is especially hard to get right, and Lorca's poetry in particular. A genius in his own language, rendering his magnificence in English is particularly difficult.

So it gives me great joy to be able to praise this collection to high heaven. I stumbled across it while working on a production of his play YERMA in which we decided to use some of his poetry as a way of entering Yerma's interior landscape. I am delighted to say that these translations, which have clearly been done with enormous sensitivity and love both for Lorca's poetry and the English and Spanish language, capture perfectly the mixture of soul, deep pain, romantic yearning and exquisite spirituality that is this great poet's work.

Lorca put his heart and soul 100% into everything he wrote. Here you get a wide span of his work, all beautifully rendered. The Dark Sonnets Of Love are especially good, but there is a great deal of wonder here. Add to this an excellent sympathetic and informative introduction which has lots to reveal about Lorca and illuminating insights into his concept of 'the Duende' which opens up whole vistas of understanding into his life and work, and you have a must-read.

Love Lorca? Then this the book for you.

Love this poetry book! I love Lorcas poems and works and this book is great to pop into my pocket to take anywhere. As I love to read his works in the original Spanish this is for me as I can check up on any words not understood on the dual page printed in English. A perfect gift for any poetry lovers!

A good choice for lovers of original and emotional poetry. Even in translation the vivid imagery and drama of Lorca comes steaming through. If you write poetry Lorca will challenge you to widen your style.

5.0 out of 5 stars too much politics ever for so great writer, 17 April 2009

Carlos Vazquez Quintana "cvq" (Linares- Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Garcia Lorca it's said frequently to be the best poet in the last 150 years in Spain, but the truth for impartial not professionals of literature is his name is subjected to too much controversy owing two facts: his homosexuality, that coincided with Spanish Civil war and his subsequent stupid murder, possibly owing paradoxically to his fame.
So, still today, at less in Spain it's impossible to elucidate if Lorca was as good are it's usually considered, as he was contemporaneous of many writers of great genius, some clearly inferior, but not all. I'm afraid the Lorca's case still will need another 100 years to dissipate the passions than surrounds his work and then judge freely. Themes of Lorca were very own of South Spain, polarised in two extremes, light poems, and tragical plays dealing mostly with women's problems in 1930 but he had talent enough to see and judge life of the USA and New York.
People at favor or counter Lorca both have the same problem in Spain: both judge, but no one has read him.
