3.0 out of 5 stars Fell apart
I opened the package, took the book out and opened it to the first page. Then the cover fell clean off. I am disappointed with this, as it's a Penguin book and these are usually good copies. I've never had anything like this before by Penguin. Such a shame. Will have to glue it back on now...

5.0 out of 5 stars Insomniacs make good writers, 2 Jan 2013

Dickens wrote great fiction with an underlying social message conveying the hardships people faced as the Industrial Revolution marched relentlessly on. Night walks, taken from his actual observations of real life people and institutions, is a fascinating insight into the real world from which he drew his stories-I just wish there were more of them

5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful and atmospheric glimpse of the Victorian City of London at night, 4 Mar 2014

This review is from: Night Walks (Penguin Great Ideas) (Paperback)
This was a replacement copy for one I already had, following the exhibition at the Museum of London on Dickens' London. It is, as you would expect, a beautifully written account of Dickens' night walks through the City of London, due to bouts of insomnia. You can almost smell the fog, the cold, the night watchmen's braziers. Well observed, not without a certain melancholic humour. Especially interesting if you know the City of London, which, though much changed by modern building, has not changed much in atmosphere at night.
