5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Framely Examiner
Historic Framley is more consistently funny than the earlier book. The actual articles in the Examiner all revolve around the same joke: that they are incompetently written. This is hilarious up to a point, but the real highlights were always the varied and psychotic advertisements and job offers. Historic Framley is almost entirely made up of that sort of thing, and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacklustre....
The first Framley book, "The Framley Examiner" is, quite simply, brilliant. It's a shame, then, that the authors obviously felt that they had to follow this up. The result, "Historic Framley", just feels forced.
Don't get me wrong - there are some good laughs in it - the "When we were pigs*" exhibition (*other theories available), being a brilliant example, but there...

Don't get me wrong - there are some good laughs in it - the "When we were pigs*" exhibition (*other theories available), being a brilliant example, but there isn't enough good material here to justify an entire book - you have to cut through the filler to get to it.
Should you get it? Well, if you've already got the first book, this may well disappoint. On the other hand, it *is* funny, but just not as brilliant as its predicessor. Take it or leave it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Framely Examiner, 2 Aug 2004

Historic Framley is more consistently funny than the earlier book. The actual articles in the Examiner all revolve around the same joke: that they are incompetently written. This is hilarious up to a point, but the real highlights were always the varied and psychotic advertisements and job offers. Historic Framley is almost entirely made up of that sort of thing, and makes for much more varied, disturbing and funny reading. So maybe it depends what you liked more about the original paper - the one-joke spoof journalism or the spoof adverts. If the latter turns you on - 'Whoft Hospice: not all of our patients come here to die. But they all do. In the end. We're looking for a caring individual with a strong back who understands that life can be short as well as long in this fast-moving, high-turnover business...' - buy this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as The Framley Examiner, 10 Mar 2004

I bought this on the strength of the previous publication from these people, the Framley Examiner, which I bought on the strength of a 2 hour "laugh-fest" at the site. I wasn't disappointed when I bought that book, but I have to say I am with this effort.
It's got the same sort of surreal style as the original, but it goes overboard in many respects, and it can get quite weary to read (the overuse of colours doesn't help). I read it mostly in short bursts, just to get through it, and put it back on my shelf. I've re-read the original book numerous times, but it's going to take some sort of holocaust to get me to re-read Historic Framley.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Historic Framley (Hardcover)
As the other review mentions, this book pales in comparison to the Framley Examiner, perhaps due to the fact that it has to focus on a specific aspect (History) rather than just coming up with surreal and hilarious news stories. I tried to get through this book on a number of occassions but just ended up putting it down again. If the Framley folks are going to continue making books, I hope they remember how to be funny again.
