As other reviewers have said, there is some fascinating information here, and Sinclair is clearly passionate about his subject. However, if you are not a terribly patient reader (like me) and want a flowing story, beware! This book could make you very frustrated. It could have been edited down quite successfully by about 30% and still contained all the interesting bits. However, Sinclair takes the term "florid" to extremes, and has some annoying writing quirks. Many short sentences. No verbs. That kind of thing. I'm packing up my copy and sending it to a retired professor in Chicago who is truly mad about London and has time to wade through the uneccessary verbiage.

There's a great book in here trying to get out. What a shame Sinclair's writing abilities aren't up to the task of writing that book. Instead he tries to impress us with obscure references, bores us with dull irrelevancies, and frustrates us by spending far too little time on the few passages that are interesting. My advice: don't buy this! Instead you should read “45” by Bill Drummond, a writer Sinclair is joined by for one of his first M25 walks. What a shame Sinclair couldn't write as interestingly as Drummond.

I won't be attempting this one as I found Lights Out for the Territory difficult to get into owing to style and being 20 years old

The London Orbital, I found it fantastic. It is a great book written by a man that has so much feeling in what he does. To get full enjoyment out of this book you need to know something about the history of the country and a lot about the geography of the green belt. For me, I am lucky, I know a lot about both and maybe more than him about the geography. The research he has done, the political aspect he has added and yet not going against any political party will open up your eyes to many things. Sometimes I found it difficult to keep up with him, but it was a book I could not put down. This book opened my eyes to a lot of things I have never seen. All I say, is if you buy this book and there are times you can't keep up with it, please stay with it till the end. Go back to it and read it again. I am lucky as I understood it all. I know that Shakespear would have been proud to write such a wonderful piece as this is.
