4.0 out of 5 stars What does it REALLY feel like to give birth?
This book is a bit misleading because when you pick it up, you think it's a fictional work. It's actually a warts and all account of what pregnancy and giving birth are like for 5 different women. It covers topics that will interest all first time mums to be, including: what does pregnancy do to your boobs, your tummy and your sex life, and what does it really feel...

2.0 out of 5 stars Informative but sneery
I am 14.5 weeks pregnant and this has been a useful read, particularly the stuff around birth and coping in the first few days after the child has been born. However, I didn't warm to any of the authors - the way they talk about other women in their NCT ante-natal class is horribly remniscent of a school classroom and doesn't exactly make me want to hurry to...

1.0 out of 5 stars The Fat Ladies Club, 6 Feb. 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fat Ladies' Club (Paperback)
I found this book irritating & smug. Anyone who wasn't in the clique of five at the antenatal class was constantly criticised and sneered at. How DARE they compare a couple of the ladies to Viz's fat slags? Just who do they think they are to be the arbiters of what is and isn't acceptable appearance wise while pregnant? There is also little in the way of any practical or useful advice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing, 19 Mar. 2004

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am going through my first pregnancy and expected this to be a chatty, cosy account of pregnancy and childbirth in the style of the excellent 'Best Friends' Guide to Pregnancy'. What I got was a very poor account of five women's experiences, badly edited and punctuated (no marks to Penguin!) from a designer-y clique. The experiences were all very narrow, in the 'easy come, easy go, conception, childbirth and life is very easy' style of a late twenties/early thirties group of middle class women. Where were the tales of possible pitfalls? Even subsequent miscarriages were glossed over in a 'but she soon came to terms with it and got on with life' sort of way. This doesn't prepare you for anything. It wasn't helpful, but it would suit the typical women's magazine reader, not any pregnant woman seeking help and enlightenment.
