5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, 30 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Alamein: War Without Hate (Paperback)
Great book - very thorough but keeps the history story line going so well that you don't want to put it down. Another of those bits of history where you know "how it ends" but you certainly didn't know what happened before the end!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, 5 Dec 2011
This review is from: Alamein: War Without Hate (Paperback)
I like these types of history books that use personal anecdotes from soldiers from both sides to spice up the dry facts of the events ...a real page turner that made me feel like I was actually there ...BRAVO !

5.0 out of 5 stars Authoritative and readable, 22 April 2011
This review is from: Alamein: War Without Hate (Paperback)
When a history book comes along that is both authoritative and readable too, you should go out and buy it. The war in North Africa was one of the most interesting campaigns of World War II, and this is a book that tells the story in such a way that you don't want to put it down. The authors have found fascinating witnesses to describe what happened from the soldiers' point of view, and cleverly interweave these accounts with the wider sweep of the campaign so that you know what was going on, what the strategic aims were, and how it felt for the poor bloody infantry at the sharp end. Anyone who is interested in the way the Second World War was fought, nearly lost, and won should buy this book

Very well researched, and the writers tell the story in a vivid and readable way. A difficult book to put down once you are reading it. The best of the various accounts of the battle.

5.0 out of 5 stars War without hate?, 26 Aug 2011
Is there ever a war without hate? I doubt it.

However, in the context implied it is a valuable and rare reminder that the demagoguery, pogroms and civilian annihilation of Germany's war on the Eastern Front was not present in its African campaigns.

If Germany had capitulated after Africa, the dis-honour which is attached to their Eastern Front and racial atrocities of later in the war (and may yet last for hundreds of years) would not have occurred.

As Churchill said of El-Alamein, "before it there were no victories; after it, there were no defeats."

For a battle to be so pivotal in world history alone, this is worth reading, and it helps that the authors have done so fine a job telling it.
