5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!, 2 Sep 2011
This review is from: The Complete Pelican Shakespeare (Penguin Classics) (Hardcover)
This has become my most loved book on my bookshelf. I love the feel of it, the paper is the perfect thickness and of good quality (white smooth paper, not the cheap brown one), the text is just the right size and not too crammed into margins that go right into the middle of the book where you can't read it. This is one of the few versions that has footnotes, although they are placed at the bottom right hand corner of each page, making it hard to read the plays properly while jumping to the footnotes every now and then. While reading, I like to cross out irrelevant line numbers, such as the ones placed every 10 lines, and the ones that have notes that aren't really necessary to read as the meaning is already clear, in order to read the text more seamlessly the next time with fewer interruptions. The introductions at the beginning of each play is not too long, and holds just enough information without being too boring, me being someone who reads Shakespeare for pleasure rather than to analyse. A summary at the beginning of each play however would be useful for those who've never read Shakespeare before and don't know what each play is about, and would make it less confusing. Aside from this, this book is just perfect, and even comes with a nice red ribbon as a bookmark.

4.0 out of 5 stars An informative and convenient Edition, 7 Mar 1999
By A Customer
The Complete Pelican Shakespeare is a very informative and most convenient edition for Shakespeare's complete works. The introduction for each play is brief enough to provide guidance without unduly delaying the reader's forage for the substance of the main text. The footnotes are kept minimum yet adequate to shed light on difficult words and passages. The Appendix or Notes on the Text (or Texts) for individual plays are quite useful. Furthermore, the quality of the pepar and binding also makes this edition attractive. It is an excellent edition for Shakespeare's fans who like to tuck a light copy of the complete works in the bag when travelling.
