5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a classic, 4 Oct. 2009
This is a wonderful picture book, tender and touching and with so much in it for children to think about and discuss. Rose and her old English sheepdog John Brown live together very contentedly, until the Midnight Cat appears at the window. Rose wants to let the cat in, John Brown won't even admit it exists. Only when he realises how much the cat means to Rose, does he let it into their house. In 32 pages the author and illustrator explore big ideas subtly and sensitively, there is more to find with each rereading. Beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, 3 Sept. 2009
This review is from: John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat (Picture Puffin) (Paperback)
I had this book as a child back when it was first published, and still treasure my copy even though it is now very tatty. It is a wonderful story which shows that love can generate jealousy, but that real love is infinite and also generates selflessness. The illustrations are beautifully done and I can't imagine a better style to suit the story. I love this book very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really different kids book, 29 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat (Picture Puffin) (Paperback)
This is so much more thoughtful and interesting than so many of the other books we've got. I enjoy reading it over & over again (more than I can say for some of the Julia Donaldson books) it is not really suitable for very young kids but anyone with the ability to stop on a page and look at the detail will be very impressed
