5.0 out of 5 stars Sense of Self
"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way"

- Leo Tolstoy "Anna Karenina"

Anna Karenina is a beautifully written novel about three families: the Oblonskys, the Levins, and the Karenins. The first line (one of the most famous in literature) hints at Tolstoy's own views about happy and unhappy marriages having these...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nineteenth century scandal
Upon learning that Anna Karenina had won a place in the BBC's Top One-Hundred Books list, I thought it was about time I gave it a read. Being approximately eight hundred pages in length and having been translated from its original Russian, it was no mean feat, I assure you. I enjoyed the opening immensely; Tolstoy begins the book with news of a household in chaos, with...

3.0 out of 5 stars Hype or Hope?, 2 July 2008

This review is from: Anna Karenina (Penguin Classics) (Paperback)
The translations of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have been much praised for making the Russian masters more accessible. I'm afraid I find this one often strained and dull. Opening 'Anna' at random I read this: 'After seeing her guests off, Anna began pacing up and down the room without sitting down' (page 704). Apart from the clunky 'down, down', could Anna really have paced her room standing up?

1.0 out of 5 stars Anna Karenina Hardcover, 17 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Recently got the hardcover version, thinking that it would be more manageable to read. I haven't seen anything worse. Pages just glued together and tucked under thick papers, just terrible. Stick to the paperback version.

1.0 out of 5 stars Spoiled, 19 Sep 2012
One only gets to read a great novel for the first time once. If you would like that experience to be ruined for you for Anna Karenina then read this version of this book which contains at least one spoiler in the "List of Principal Characters" at the front of the book. The publisher should be ashamed.

3.0 out of 5 stars anna karenina review, 12 Oct 2012

The plot is interesting but the book is tedious and hard going. it takes ages for anything to happen. The film is mush better than the original book

1.0 out of 5 stars Long with more padding than plot, 22 July 2003
This review is from: Anna Karenina (Penguin Classics) (Paperback)
Read this because it was on the 100 Big Read book list...I kept going through the 900+ pages thinking "something will happen soon" - I hope.
I simply can not understand why some people rate this "favourite" - the prose centres more on pondering the different methods of farming in Russia than on the storyline and fails to explore the vague plot lines that are setup (such as the debts of Vronsky)
Long, turgid and I'd rather take up knitting than read another Tolstoy

This book came with all the pages having very rough edges on the right hand side.
I didn't bother to read it.
I would advise you to look at versions in a bookshop first.
