3.0 out of 5 stars Fighting Fantasy converts to role play gaming!
This book is *part* of the "first edition" Advanced Fighting Fantasy ruleset.
This is a bit "the beginning" of the role play adventure for Fighting Fantasy franchise, the rules are sufficient to play, but more rules (and optional rules) are in following books, like "Blacksand" etc.
In practice, "first edition" ruleset has been spread across a handful of books,...

If your abit of a Science Fiction freak like myself or you have a pretty imaginitive mind (even if your just a fan of the Fighting Fantasy series) this book is definatley a pick up and don't put down.
Although it only took me a few days to read, the book is more of a guide, you have to route through looking at certain bits whilst you have a pen in your hand and are jotting bits of writing down on paper. It's a very inspirational book if you have idea's about writing a "Dungeons and Dragons" style game/book/fan-fiction
More details about the book now, it's divided up into basic sections, The first is an introduction type area which includes map ideas, along with basic characters to help give you a think about your own Fighting Fantasy book/game. The Second Part features an actual Fighting Fantasy adventure so you can read it yourself to get some ideas, The 3rd get's more advanced which steadily makes you think about storylines, casts, Speeches and more Fighting. The 4th part is the 2nd Fighting Fantasy adventure to get you gripped on the advance rules. Finally, the last part is a basic sum up with prices of weapons, tallies and charts
This concludes to a very detailes construction set to writing your own Fantasy adventures. It's definatley worth a buy

5.0 out of 5 stars Advanced Fighting Fantasy!, 1 Feb. 2010

Advanced Fighting Fantasy is one of the original Role-Playing Games (RPG's) based upon the popular (and now revived) Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks.

Providing fans (new and age-old alike) with the means to further immerse themsleves in the world of fighting fantasy, this is an extraordinary book that (along with Blacksand! & Allansia) should be given a revision and re-printing in light of Fighting Fantasys revival and continuing popularity.

Simple pleasures can be obtained from this book by taking your Advanced Fighting Fantasy Charcter and immersing them (appropiatly) in regular Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fighting Fantasy converts to role play gaming!, 10 April 2013

This review is from: Dungeoneer: Advanced Fighting Fantasy (Puffin Adventure Gamebooks) (Paperback)
In practice, "first edition" ruleset has been spread across a handful of books, that gives an idea of how it was born and how it was "made up" across a few years, but doesn't help clarity.

In fact, this book as a ruleset is now useless as the vast majority of Advanced Fighting Fantasy players now use the "second edition" ruleset, that is actually pretty similar, but has the advantage of being printed in a single book (Advanced Fighting Fantasy role play game) that is clearer and better presented for modern tastes / readers.

So, why buying this book?

Just for the two adventures presented, that are reasonably short and portable, easy to run and with some "old school" Fighting Fantasy atmosphere. Not bad at all!
This book can be found very cheaply sold second hand and, while almost half of it can be better replaced with "Advanced Fighting Fantasy role play game", the latest doesn't have the adventures in it, so it' very handy to lift them from the Dungeoneer!
The AFF ruleset suffers a bit the lack of original adventures for the setting (not much is available and it's mostly conversied from gamebooks), so these two short adventures are something to be saved and passed on...
