4.0 out of 5 stars Whimsical Words, 10 Feb. 2009
This review is from: The Word Party (Young Puffin Books) (Paperback)
This is an entertaining collection of poems by Richard Edwards and like his popular companion title, 'Whispers from a Wardrobe', it is illustrated by John Lawrence. However, one only notices the illustrations during a second reading because the poems grab, tickle and tease the imagination. There are funny poems about the cook who made a submarine from prunes, leeks and eggs, and an amusing one about a cloud who wanted to rain. Popular poems with 7 - 11 year olds include 'Don't', 'The Number' and 'Be Careful'.
One of the cleverest poems begins:
"Loving words clutch crimson roses,
Rude words sniff and pick their noses,
Sly words come dressed as foxes,
Short words stand on cardboard boxes,
Common words tell jokes and gabble,
Complicated words play Scrabble....."
