4.0 out of 5 stars If you're into garden history, then this one is a must-buy., 28 Dec 2001

Art historians write 'pretentious bunk' about garden history, scoffs the author of this glossy volume. Yet Quest-Ritson may also be guilty of bias in his own opinionated review of gardening as social history. He states that history is usually written by the middle classes about the upper (Dickens and Mayhew might have debated this) and that deer parks were little more than open-air meat larders. Whatever your viewpoint, this solidly-researched and pleasing book has bite-size chapters and loads of superbly-reproduced illustrations. It's a pleasure to read and own, although the vertical chapter headers on every page can become distracting and you may have to go searching for details of some visuals. Like an amiable debate at a dinner party, this book will surely interest, educate, entertain and intrigue the minds of academic and general readers alike. If you are into gardening or garden history, then put this in your basket now!

This review is from: The English Garden: A Social History (Paperback)
This is a splendid publication. My main interest is the English Garden in the late 19/early20 C. and this book helped a lot. Thoroughly recommended.
