This is a large and beautiful book, a pleasure to own or give as a present. There are thousands of quotations listed by author and an index listed by topic. The range is, as the attractive dust cover says, from Muhammed Ali to Emile Zola and there are brief biographies of each individual. For example, under Ian Feming, we learn where the name James Bond came from and we are given the whole original quotation about the Martini which must be "Shaken and not stirred." The Bible is well represented as is Shakespeare and yet it seems to me thoroughly up-to-date. It is very appealing to look at and use, with its orange hard back and good quality paper. Its size makes it more of a coffee table than a bedside book but that is not to denigrate its content: it is serious, exhaustive and authoritative. Thoroughly recommended - and a very good price for such a weighty book.

What an excellent book for everyone who loves quotations.
Even more so for those who scour their few remaining 'little grey cells' for the source of elusive ones!
It now replaces my ancient, dog-eared paperback of the same book, c.1970+ vintage, which has been well-loved and well-used.
I love the brief biographical notes of those whose quotations are included. And it is FAR more up to date.
A superb book, I'd recommend it to anyone.
I bought the 2nd copy 'on spec' as a Christmas present.
The recipient will be delighted, as am I!
Carolyn

4.0 out of 5 stars You can quote me, 3 May 2013

As comprehensive as most large quotation compilations. Carefully chosen and complete quotations, with fascinating background information for many entries. Wide ranging and up-to-date, the content is wonderful. The sections on hymns and on nursery rhymes are especially noteworthy. One cavil. To do justice to the contents, the keyword index should be a lot larger, as it is in "Chamber's" for example. Overall though, a fine and valuable addition to one's library.
