5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant survey of sibling rivalry and love, 27 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: With Your Crooked Heart (Paperback)
I love all Dunmore's books but this is one of her best. The story of two very different brothers whose lives intersect with that of one woman who, at different times, loves both. Cool and precise prose and a marvellous ending. Anyone contemplating plastic surgery should definitely read this first!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful writer, 22 Feb. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: With Your Crooked Heart (Paperback)
Though Burning Bright remains my favorite, this haunting novel is a must for any Helen Dunmore fans. It is about parenthood, alcohol, fate, the creation of our own destiny and that of others, and, as with all of Dunmore's books, about secrets. She writes with a poet's precision and exquisite sense of language, always.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Really good Book, 24 April 2007
This review is from: With Your Crooked Heart (Paperback)
I've had this book for a while and now I can't understand why it's taken me so long to read it. I suppose in the initial few pages I found the characters difficult to get in to...it seemed abit seedy. After I'd ploughed on though I really got into it and couldn't put it down! The portrayal of the alcholic and her flash backs were interesting and Anna and David were fascinating too. The end was gripping.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sinuous, slippery, sinister tale! Excellent ending......., 24 Oct. 2000

This book starts where you least expect it, and finishes by tipping over the edge - just when you have it all thought out. The language is polished, precise and pristine and the characters are well drawn. A story of desire and children.

This book was winner of the Orange Prize and I’m amazed at the paucity of reviews on the Amazon site, some of which are unappreciative of the robust delights of this book. Dunmore’s poetic language is a plus, but she uses it with delicacy, never pushing too far with a metaphor or a simile. I was captivated by the story of the two brothers, twelve years separating their birth, but a strong bond between them. Paul, the eldest marries, Louise, who in later life turns to alcohol as the marriage fails. Paul’s business life is successful and though Paul tries to help Johnnie, he doesn’t have the same work ethic as his brother. He’s a beautiful man, but a weak one. Their daughter Anna is unaware of who her father really is.

Anna, Johnnie, Paul and Louise are the central characters, but Louise cannot accept that Paul has married again. Meanwhile Anna is 11 and wants to live with her mother, or at least see her. Since Paul and his new wife Sonia moved away to a posh new house in the country, Anna never sees her mother and one day, with her friend from the village, David, also aged 11, she sets off to find her mother. Anna remembers the way as she used to be taken to see her mother when she was younger. They find the house, but no one answers the door.

Meanwhile a deal has gone wrong for Johnnie and Louise has set off with him for Denmark. On board the ferry. Johnnie is worried that someone connected with the dodgy deal is following them.

This is a beautiful book. The characterisation is rife with deep insight – it is sad, yes, but there is something in the writing that hooks you in, makes you feel with the characters, especially Anna.

4.0 out of 5 stars Your Crooked Heart, 30 Jun. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: With Your Crooked Heart (Paperback)
A truly compelling novel, but from the start you know that one of the brothers will come to a sticky end. The female character has a weak personality and is dominated by her husband and his money although it does her no good in the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and could not put it down. It was my first Helen Dunmore novel and prompted me to read many more.
