Common sense is overrated...

"Nobody is officially supposed to have any experience of the substances listed in the British Misuse of Drugs Act"...

"When people want advice about what they are taking, they will seek it out (and more often find it uselessly partial or else non-existent).

Although this book is now over 10 years old it is still one of the best books I have ever read in regards to drugs - full stop...

It's comprehensive, reads extremely well and is very humorous in all the right ways. Drugs are here to stay - in fact they've probably always been here - and what's interesting is lots of people like feeling "out of it".

What's quite sad - especially in this age of information - is the amount of mis-information - especially around drugs - drug taking - how to stop taking (if one wants to) - and what to do instead...

Is wanting to have the experience of an altered form of consciousness hardwired - rather than a "sin" and a weakness of the flesh?

Who knows...

This is a book that would benefit from sitting on the shelf of every parent because at some stage "Talking to Frank" just doesn't cut it - I know this because my eldest child is currently in Ibiza attending an opening party...

And having "been there - got the T Shirt" and actually knowing a few people my age "still wearing the T Shirt" and functioning quite well - some extremely well - Stuart Walton's analysis of why we alter our consciousness and the reasoning of our drug taking is fascinating and very well argued...

Another strange "fact" is more people die from legal drugs than illegal drugs - check out the China Study by Colin and Tom Cambell - which is about the food chain - but I digress...

I've become an expert in helping people "get better" especially around addiction issues - weight issues - and a few other things because I acknowledge the "need" to feel better - or the "need" to feel different - because "normal" is terrible for some people - and taking a substance "works"...

What's needed is a coherent middle ground - and that's where Stuart hits "the spot"...

Great book - and well worth buying - stoned or sober...

Your choice - as I like to say...

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate drinking companion, 25 Feb. 2013

The book is a pleasure - licit as it is. The subject is addressed comprehensively. The writing engages even in the delving of detail. Erudite and sober. Though he sees it from all angles - including a Stars and Bars head next to the spittoon perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing, 3 Nov. 2007

I read this book years ago and it changed my life. Purely because it showed me that the religion I had been born into and thought was real life was man made. I renounced religion after reading this book and have been on a self realisation journey ever since thanks to this book.

I know the book is about intoxicants, but its coverage of religious history opened my eyes and as someone whos has taken just about every recreational drug, it was a very interesting read.
