This review is from: Florence Nightingale: The Woman and Her Legend (Paperback)
This is a superb book. It is meticulously researched and beautifully written and the truth is extracted with great intelligence. In the process various myths are dispelled. Her family life is described with much care and particularly her struggles to escape from it. The author keeps a fine balance between a highly intelligent woman with a firm mind and the goodness for which she has been so praised. I cannot think that anymore can be written about her. It is a book to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive account of a fascinating life, 28 May 2012

This review is from: Florence Nightingale: The Woman and Her Legend (Paperback)
This must be the definitive biography of Florence Nightingale - although she is so well known, so much of her reputation is built on myth, and in my case on the Florence Nightingale: An adventure from history (Ladybird books) that I read as a child! Bostridge carefully demolishes the mythology and builds a thorough and comprehensive picture of her life and works. We learn that Nightingale was so much more than 'The Lady with the Lamp', and I was surprised by the extent of her work and her influence - being a woman in the nineteenth century, much of this was done behind the scenes and thus has been lost to popular history. She deserves to be better known for her real efforts and achievements, rather than for the small part of her life spent walking the wards of a hospital in the Crimea.

This book will be of great interest to anyone interested in women's history, social history, the history of nursing and public health, and the way in which the work of some tenacious and forward- thinking people in the nineteenth century made possible the improvements in medical care we have today. It is also a personal story of a great individual who had the determination to transcend many of the social and cultural barriers which faced middle-class Victorian women who wanted to carve out a profession or career of their own. Florence Nightingale deserves to be remembered, not for her mythical saintliness, but for her hard work and determination to achieve something more than was expected of women in that time and place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant portrait of this complex woman, eminently readable., 1 Mar. 2014

Really enjoyed learning about Florence Nightingale, there was so much to her, not just the 'Angel of the Lamp'. An Incredibly determined woman to be able to break away from the role of the typical Victorian woman and achieve so much during her very interesting life. Bostridge's biography gives a full portrait of her character and relationships with her family as well as her accomplishments.
