This review is from: All Things Wild and Wonderful (Paperback)
This book was first published in 1996 (2003), has 275 pages, 2 maps and 15 colour pictures with numerous beautiful B/W drawings by Rob Wishart. The book is dedicated to author's Mum and Dad. KOBIE KRUGER was born on a farm in the Northern Province, South Africa. She met her husband KOBUS at the university of Pretoria and they lived in Windhoek (Namibia) and Johannesburg before moving to KRUGER National Park in 1980. They have 3 daughters -Hettie, Sandra and Karin. Her husband was a Game Ranger. After spending 11 years in MAHLANGENI region in the north, they are transfered in 1991, first to Crocodile Bridge and then in 1994 to Pretorius Kop, in the south of Kruger National Park.
The new house at Crocodile Bridge was right on the Crocodile River, with a spitting cobra outside and bats inside the house. Kobie had a great problem remembering names and faces. The most thing alarmed and distressed her was the 'telephone'. LIONS IN THE NORTH KRUGER STILL HAD NATURAL FEAR OF MAN. In their 3 years stay here, she had filled 3 and 1/2 books of 200 pages with messages by phone! A lion is injured after shooting and Kobus is attacked on his left leg, and then taken to Komatipoort clinic and then to Nelspruit Hospital. After 1 month of treatment and skin grafting, he was home. Kobus finds a lion cub and they adopt him, calling him LEO (Leeu). Kobie fosters many other animals and birds.
Leo would play with house dog 'Wolfie' and their 3 girls. When lions roared close to the house, Leo only showed little interest. On 28th November, Leo was 1 year old and weighing 100 kg. On 11th of December, Sandra marries Paul at Komatipoort. In 1994, Kobus was transfered to Pretorius Kop. As Leo was getting older and larger, GARETH PATTERSON (The Lion Man) comes to visit them. After some problems, Leo was to be moved to PAMUZINDA (Royal Meeting Place) PARK, Zimbabwe. Then Kobie's thumb is bitten by another lioness and she had to be taken to Harare Hospital. On return Kobie adopts a genet kitten(Kietsie - domestic cat -Kitsy). Then Hettie gets married. On 17th July, Kobie ,Kobus and Karin go to Pamuzinda Safari Lodge on the Serui River, to visit Leo, after 1 years break. Karin, now is a famous painter exhibiting her work in South Africa and internationally. This is a very touching and emotional story of a lion cub and his human family. Other books by this author are:-
(1) Mahlangeni 1994
(2) The Wilderness Family 2001 (2003)
Having born in Kenya, I enjoyed reading this book.
Read and ENJOY.
