This review is from: Weary: Life of Sir Edward Dunlop (Paperback)
I assume anyone looking at this will know about Weary, probably having reading his diaries. This book gives a useful context to his days as a POW by providing essential information that is not provided in the diaries such as how prisoners got their money, how the command structures work & also what he really felt about some of his colleagues.
I was surprised by how interesting it was to read about his early life (once you got past the tedious family history sectio) particularly his years undertaking medical training. Also his life after the war although compressed in a 100 pages makes enjoyable reading.
The author is not too critical in her assessment of weary the man but she would probably say it hardly needs spelling out that he was not the easiest of people to be married to. Clearly he put his career and his social activities way before his responsibilities to his wife or children who all must have wondered at times whether he'd left them for good!
Read the diaries first then this you won't regret it!
