4.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not a complete reference in itself, 14 Jan 2002
This review is from: Civilization, Society and Religions: "Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego", "Future of an Illusion" and "Civilization and Its Discontents" (The Penguin Freud library) (Paperback)
Although I bought this book for a degree course, I found much of it interesting enough to read when not really required to do so! It includes a selection of Freuds most famous works and for this reason is a very useful read. However, as it is one of a collection, it is not a complete reference source. The translators notes and introductions are good and help to give a feel for the piece, without reading it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars An advanced critique of modern society and its various attributes and historical implications., 27 Sep 2010
This review is from: Civilization, Society and Religions: "Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego", "Future of an Illusion" and "Civilization and Its Discontents" (The Penguin Freud library) (Paperback)
The 12th volume of Freud's collected works, this is well worth a read for those who are interested in studying sociology or psychology.
Linguistically it is fairly dense at times, at least for those who have not read critical texts to this caliber before hand.

I personally found his part scientist part sociologist viewpoint to be very effective and instigates an informative critique of the society
that we in the west call home, perhaps hitherto taking for granted, primarily from an objective perspective and thus allows for you to
chew on the meal that he outs forward for you to digest...

Freud has helped me to understand and appreciate a great deal more about the way that we as human beings have operated, in a historical
and modern day reflection.

One of the most worthwhile books I have read on this subject, certainly giving justice to the claim of Freud being the monumental critical figure
that he was and remains within literature.

Recommended.
