5.0 out of 5 stars inside the (clunking) machine, 7 April 2006
This review is from: The German Dictatorship: Origins, Structure and Consequences of National Socialism (Penguin history) (Paperback)
This vast tome really gets to grips with the question - how did Hitler's regime work - why did it come to power - how did it keep it? the the thorny question of the German-ness of the ideology is broached (but not unhtinkingly) but it is the historically changing, opportunistic structure and techniques of control and management which are superbly handled (I am not a porfessional historian and think that perhaps occasional details may be out of date). Less empahsis on the (roots of the ) 'ideas' of ideologues - but that's not his remit. If you want to be able to say more than 'Stab in the Back ' and 'inflation' as explanations than this is your book.
