5.0 out of 5 stars In a way my favourite book ever, 27 Oct. 2012
This review is from: The Penguin History of Medieval Europe (Penguin History) (Paperback)
As previous reviewer said, this is an excellent general overview of certain parts of the middle ages. In certain areas it is perhaps a bit sketchy (focusing a lot on Hungary in the Ottoman conquest) but its not a massive book and it covers a lot of ground.
It is an absolute joy to read though, very well written, very concise, never waffly - and always interesting. While I read it as a history student I would recommend it to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good general book about middle-ages, 21 Aug. 2001

This review is from: The Penguin History of Medieval Europe (Penguin History) (Paperback)
Author covers a millenium in 320 pages and does quite a good job. All the main events of the period, except history of Byzantium, are discussed: the rise and decline of papacy, big crusading adventures and formation of nation states. The author divides the book into the paragraphs that touch upon certain themes (like the great schism). Despite that the book is easy to follow as Mr Keen more or less follows the chronological order of events. I think that the book is excellent introduction to the fascinating epoch of middle-ages.

It gave me so much information in a very concise way. I know it is a book I will dip into over the years to fill in gaps in my knowledge or to prepare for European visits to give a background history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Europe's historical complexity exlained, 25 Oct. 2014

This review is from: The Penguin History of Medieval Europe (Penguin History) (Paperback)
The book presents a useful introduction to aid understanding of Europe's complex medieval history, especially the later well-documented periods. However the early formation of the individual countries and states is based on scant historical evidence, and could benefit from an update to include the latest genetics, archaeological research etc. Indeed in this respect the settlement pattern seen as data plots along the Roman roads depicted in http://fchknols.wordpress.com, suggest trade may have been important in establishing the variety of languages of this region.
