William Beckford (1760-1844), was the only child of an extremely wealthy family. His father was a sugar tycoon in the West Indies and his mother a granddaughter of the sixth Earl of Abercorn. Beckford inherited and spent one of the greatest fortunes ever made.
He went on the Grand Tour at the age of twenty, with his tutor Mr Lettice and was encouraged to keep notes on his travels. This slim volume compiled and edited by Elizabeth Mavor, is a beautifully observed and well written account of his journey and is taken from one of the five surviving copies from an imprint of 500, published during his lifetime.

Thinking the account too revealing of his inner self, Beckford burned the rest.
It is an extraordinarily honest account by a complex and passionate young man.
I enjoyed it very much.

Published in the Penguin Travel Library Series, 1986,(Paperback).
