What is there to say about ANY of Mortimer's "Rumpole books"?

How can anyone not possibly enjoy reading of Horace Rumpole's adventures and misadventures? Can anyone find fault with a writer who does justice to whatever educational system laid the foundations for his excellent use of the English language (I am a non-native speaker). 1.0 out of 5 stars Yet again kindle the most expensive way to buy
Title says it all really. Not like this is a new bestseller. About time publishers stop being so greedy and gave decent prices on ebooks

Excellent use of appropriate vocabulary helps the reader to experience Rumpole rather than just read about his iconoclastic capers.

But let the reader be warned! Reading any one of the Rumpole books is to flirt with an incurable addiction! Even when one acquires and reads the complete series there follow many periods of re-reading. And equally enjoyable re-reading it is too - I should know, I started reading Rumpole almost three decades ago and still do so from time to time :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Intelligeble and funny entertainment, 7 Dec 2000

Rumpole does is again. A good collection of stories told by an experienced narrator. Funny to the right extend, not too hilarious. Wise, intelligent but above all human solutions for the problems created by the errors of judgement of kings and servants, judges and barristors, collegues and friends alike.

The Rumpole books are a brilliant read. Easy to read, but for the youngsters amonst you (the under 40s) you may need a reference book and/or dictionary for some of the references as it is a little historical in places. But this adds to the storyline and it's nice to reminisce about things we'd forgotten all about. WARNING! Un-put-downable once opened!

5.0 out of 5 stars RUMPOLE RULES, 4 July 2013

Mortimer's great gift is his capacity to ring countless variations on the theme of Rumpole's prowess as counsel for the defence in a variety of settings, giving new life to the courthouse drama formula. Rumpole himself is a great creation - clear-eyed about the misdemeanours of some of his clients, robust in standing up to bullying judges, quick to query dodgy police evidence, but somehow rising above it all to indulge in his love of English poetry, Oxford marmalade and the essential virtues of British law. And of course for those of us of a certain age it is now impossible to read these stories without seeing Leo McKern in the starring role. Wonderful holiday reading, but with the capacity to delight in all situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rumpole Omnibus 2, 2 Jun 2014
Superb stories about Rumpole: I have always been a fan of John Mortimer and of Rumpole and his colourless fellow-barristers, especially those three Chambers wives - in descending order of obnoxiousness, Marigold Featherstone, Phillida Erskine-Brown and Hilda Rumpole - in her way, rather sweet.

Beautifully crafted tales from a skilled writer. Rumpole is one of the gems of English comedy, and in omnibus form you get more laughs to the pound.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Rumpole, 30 Mar 2013

The novelty of the crimes defended by Rumpole and the character sketches of the defendants is superb. The barristers, his wife and staff in chambers are all unique.

Rumpole has been a firm favourite for years. To have all these stories under one cover and the added tremendous advantage of a Kindle edition is pure luxury.
