5.0 out of 5 stars the best of the market
I am a engineer who needed an intro into computer networks for my new job. Among the ones I looked into (Freeman, Held, the SAMS series etc ) I found this one the best by far.
First, the writing style is extremely friendly and casual, you feel like the man is speaking to you directly.
Second, I found the contents quite up-to-date for my purposes, which was to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Book for a new start
I really enjoyed reading Tanenbaums' books. He rally has a way to teach things. For the comment, this book is a starters book; To understand what is what in the networking world. I advise to people read this book before they sleep so that they will learn after a week, how interesting this Networking World is. For the intermediate readers this book could revive their lack...

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to read & difficult to refer to., 10 Dec 2003
By A Customer
This was required reading as part of my Networking & Data Comms module on a degree course.
It's awkwardly written, badly organised and poorly indexed. Tannenbaum gets two stars just because most of the stuff you need to know is in there somewhere.
I can't imagine why anyone of the other reviewers could award 5 stars maybe they haven't had to read it! I'd stretch it to 3 stars if I wasn't attempting to revise for upcoming exam.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too mathematical and theory-oriented, 1 Aug 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Computer Networks (Hardcover)
Unlike Tanenbaum's other books (Computer Architecture, and Operating System Design); this book is tough to read (compared to other data comm books) and covers lots of theory.

If you are looking to write a thesis, this book might be for you. If you really want to work in the communications field, skip this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is the most worthless college text i have ever read!, 28 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Computer Networks (Hardcover)
This book is long winded and overly detailed. The text is written with an arrogant tone stating the answer is "obviously" this or that. The examples are hardly explained and the chapter questions are better answered by OTHER texts that i have on this subject! This text is an excercise in frustration from begginning to end. Do not buy this book. Avoid this book at all costs. $81.00 will buy two or three other books that are FAR better and you will get more use out of them. Trust me. You do not want to torture your brain with the textual vomit contained within the pages of this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 29 July 2004
By
D. Owen "Spoodle Powered" (Great Britain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bought this for a second year computer science module in data communications and networks.
Despite its jolly cover this book is geared for academic use which probably explains why it's so tiresome.
I can't remember one thing that I looked up in this book that was useful. Encryption and routing algorithms couldn't be made less clear if you smeared the pages with manure.
And if you want to read about IP addresses and subnets in this book, well, you can't. They get a half-cocked coverage at best.
Maybe the fourth edition is better.
