5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on how Search Engines Work, 1 May 2014

This review is from: Search Engines: Information Retrieval in Practice: International Edition (Paperback)
This is an excellent book by a number of authors, including one (Bruce Croft) who is without doubt the world's leading academic expert on unstructured information retrieval and search technology.

This book is well worth reading by anyone who has a serious interest in the subject. It would be especially suitable fr Masters and Doctoral students in relevant areas, and also professionals with more general computing backgrounds how are taking on large projects in ecommerce or enterprise search.

However, if I had to pick just one book on this topic it would have to be "Introduction to Information Retrieval" by Manning, Raghavan and Schuetze. Although the Manning book is slightly more out of date it is backed up by an excellent web site. Having said that some important practical topics (Crawling, Social Search) ar stuck away at th end of the Manning book, but are up front and central for the Croft one.

So if you've ever wondered how Google works, or want to build your own read this book!
