5.0 out of 5 stars This was the book which got me into a PhD in this area
The first time I wanted to study about image processing I went to the library and picked about 10 books out of which this was the only one which made sense to me. I went on from there to studying PhD in this area. That was the first edition. The third edition has been updated with current developments in the field and is even better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overly concise in many areas, dire at explaining concepts.
This book certainly contains a great deal of content. Good luck understanding a majority of it though. The book never explains things as simply as they are, instead complicating them in a number of ways.

It does this by including unnecessarily formalized mathematics when it's really the intuition that is required (but hey, probably gets bonus academic points...

This book certainly contains a great deal of content. Good luck understanding a majority of it though. The book never explains things as simply as they are, instead complicating them in a number of ways.

It does this by including unnecessarily formalized mathematics when it's really the intuition that is required (but hey, probably gets bonus academic points for this) or by referring back to formulas defined 20-odd pages ago every few words, causing you to constantly have to flick back to move forward. Of course, then you realize the formula it's referring to is guilty of the first issue and is exceedingly simple, or perhaps not even really required to understand the topic anyway.

I don't think the basic is suited for teaching, or enhancing understanding if i'm honest. I think it's a book by seasoned computer vision academics, for seasoned computer vision academics. Anyone else could probably find better material elsewhere.
