5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic read.
This is an absolutely stunning read. It is a psychological thriller told from three different points of view, that of Claudia, her nanny Zoe and Lorraine, a detective. Claudia and Zoe's stories are told in the first person, and because each character has a very distinct, individual voice, it works from the very first chapters. It seems to add to the chilling feel of the...

2.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous twist
I think it's very hard to advertise suspense novels in a way that doesn't raise expectations. When you know there is a twist coming, I find that it can heighten the suspense, but you also need to make sure that the suspense pays off. In this case, I really don't think that it did.

The story centres around a serial killer who murders pregnant women. One of the...

I couldn't put this book down and it is well written and crafted. However, there was something a little bit contrived about it. Claudia seems to be a completely different person to the woman we meet in the first person passages. And Cecilia's character is two dimensional.
Despite the criticism I did enjoy reading it.

Well what can I say about this book other than it's gone to the top of my list for best book read so far this year, it had me hooked right from the start and I had a couple of very late nights of reading...

The story is told from the viewpoint of three main characters; Claudia, who is desperate for a baby after many failed pregnancies, Zoe, the nanny who comes to help Claudia look after her two young step-sons and the new baby, and Lorraine, a detective who has her own family issues to deal with who comes into contact with Claudia and Zoe during one of her investigations.

Sometimes I don't like how the stories flip from one character to the next as it can be confusing as to who's talking but I never had that problem at all with this book which is obviously the sign of good writing.

I've deliberately not expanded more than the synopsis as I didn' want to give too much of it away and spoil it for other readers. But all I will say is that if you love psychological thrillers then this is a MUST to be added to your reading pile.

Even 24 hours later after finishing reading this book I'm still thinking about it and how it all ended, I didn't see that coming at all! Throughout the whole story you're led in one direction before the story flips 180 degrees and leads you down a different path completely...very impressive writing.

I've only read one of the authors previous books but definitely will be adding her to my list of my must read authors... I do already have another one of her books in my TBR pile and will see if there are any others that I've missed to add too. After the suspense in this book I cannot see what Samantha Hayes has to offer us next...

2.0 out of 5 stars absolute claptrap, 20 Aug 2013

Really weak storyline, paper thin characters, and a really predictable "twist" at the end. Such a shame as there were some good ideas in there, just poorly executed. Don't take this on holiday!

Disappointed with this book after reading all the glowing reviews. The chapters with the detective Lorraine and her marital woes and boring teenage daughter Grace were so tedious. Did not find Lorraine, her husband, also a detective or their daughters Grace and Stella interesting at all. Not sure if I would bother with anymore books by this author, especially if Lorraine or her family popped up again, as some writers seem to do this if they think their readers find them interesting. Would rather watch some paint dry than than read about them again.
