4.0 out of 5 stars Cleverly constructed haunting story
Set in 1952 in Yorkshire, a young couple move into a rented flat. Philip is the new, young doctor while his new wife Isabel struggles with the isolated life with no friends or family and Philip's frequent absence due to the demands of his job. Things take a turn to the spooky when, waking from under the warmth of the old greatcoat Isabel finds in the flat, she hears a...

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor old ghosts getting this gig
I am a complete wimp but my flesh did not creep, and the only thing I was haunted by after finishing this book was the sound of my brain going "Was that it? Where's my ending? Why do we now have a four page afterword by the author?" Also: "THIS COULD HAVE BEEN SO GOOD."

The afterword is presumably to pad out a novella which Hammer, for reasons known only to...

1.0 out of 5 stars Flimsy read, 24 Jan. 2013

This review is from: The Greatcoat (Hammer) (Paperback)
This book was set for my well-established reading group and caused our first heated debate. I was in the 'didn't like it at all' camp, the majority. I'm angry that it was undeservedly published in the first place and was given some astonishing reviews in 'quality' newspapers. The story is silly and implausible; even a ghost story needs some credibility to evoke our emotions. Characterisation is feeble and the main character entirely unsympathetic and unlikeable. Plot and setting are contrived and the narrative structure is muddled. But worst of all for me is the writing. It's very poor stylistically, and not worthy of publication. The writer attempts many things and fails at all of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously?!, 10 April 2013
This review is from: The Greatcoat (Hammer) (Paperback)
It is so unfair that material like this gets published when there are some excellent writers out there who don't get a look in or whose work is rejected by publishers/agents because there is 'no market for it'. This so called 'ghost story' is thin, trite, cliched and badly written. 'He was bent over his cake, cutting it absorbedly'. Absorbedly! - you might see it in a year 10 English assigment (and cross it out!). Badly done, Ms Dunmore. Try harder next time.

Too short a story with not enough pages to develop the characters.
