I would recommend this delightful book to anyone interested in British history. Well written and unstuffy. A good holiday read.

Charlotte Higgins effortlessly weaves a picture of Roman Britain from a warp of archaeology and ancient accounts with a weft of personal visits to the very places of myth and history. Fantastic insights and constant interest.

This book Under Another Sky: Journeys in Roman Britain, was found to have several pages missing when unpacked, presumably part of a bad printing run. Unfortunately, this was only discovered when the book was out of Amazons' return period and a replacement could not be arranged through them.
However, I am pleased to say that offers of a free replacement have been received from both the author and her publishers and that the recipient of this gift can now continue to enjoy it.

No where near enough detail of the historical sites. It's all about her and her boyfriend travelling in a VW.

It is an approachable travelogue around Roman sites . There is quite a lot of history of antiquarian discoveries . I was hoping for more new facts assessments . Excellent wtriting style .

Join Charlotte Higgins as she wanders around Roman Britain, visiting the sites as they exist in contemporary Britain. Part travelogue, part guide, part history – it doesn’t do any of those things fully, but rather is an interesting discussion that encompasses all three. I imagine Higgins to be a travel companion, chatting away as we do the sites, seizing on points of interest and digressing on tangents. Enjoyable!

This book is a sort of travelogue as Charlotte, sometimes with her partner Matthew in their camper van, (there's lots of 'I's and 'we's in this book!) and sometimes with her friends Damien & Joshua (that's that box ticked then!) travel around Britain looking at Roman ruins throwing in a bit of history, both Roman & more recent, along the way.

Trouble is, it doesn't really work on any level! It doesn't inspire you to seek out the ruins themselves - she is rather disparaging about them, I can imagine her looking down her nose at them in that supercilious Guardian way. There's a bit of Roman history but no clear narrative and a bit of more recent history where the ruins have impinged on the likes of WH Auden or Wilfred Owen and that's about it.

Occasionally the book comes to life for instance when discussing the Vindolanda 'post cards'. But mostly one gets the impression of someone a bit bored wandering around some not very interesting ruins and trying to make a book out of the experience!

Recommended reading for a long train journey maybe but if you're interested in Roman Britain, look elsewhere.
