5.0 out of 5 stars The best crime writer working today?
Arnaldur Indridasson has for some time been among the cream of the explosion of crime and mystery writing currently emanating from the Nordic countries; A writer who eschews melodrama, keeps his cast of characters concise and tightly drawn and suffuses all of his writing with a slightly doleful understatement. His main character, Erlandur, superficially ticks all the...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed by this book, having enjoyed previous books by this author.
For a long time there wasn't any evidence of crime.
The chief character, policeman Erlendur pottered about looking for clues, without really having anything concrete to drive his investigations.
There was no mention of any other cases he was working on, so presumably his...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting read amongst the best, 18 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have read and liked Stig Larsons books you will like these. Being set in Iceland the plots can get a bit doom & gloom sometimes, that is the nature of Erlendur the main character. However, they never cease to be anything but interesting and good to read.
Thank you

3.0 out of 5 stars Thrillingly haunting, 24 Oct 2013

A deeply disturbing and haunting story, that begs the question, Can human beings really do these things to one another and is it possible for faith to be so strong? Great Inspector and interesting characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing until the end, 6 Oct 2013

Loved this book. I had just visited Iceland which probably helped re: imagining the setting. However, a great mystery which I couldn't guess until the end.

Very atmospheric and you care about the characters. I especially like Erlendur who though grumpy and terminally depressed, is like a dog with a bone and never gives up.

Pretty good story, as you'd expect, although you kind of know how it's going to end it's a pleasant journey getting there.

I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them but I found this one a bit hard going-perhaps it was the mood I was in.

Indridason does it again. Well writen and hard to put down. All the characters are molded into the story which makes all the books in this series so great.

I have read all this series and would recommend as a well written book. Each book is different . Really enjoyed reading them. They have a different feel to them when compared to other thriller or detective stories I have read and I have read a lot of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chilled by Circumstance, 8 Nov 2012

It might be considered too much of a contrivance to once again link an early family death, a pair of deaths some years later and a death by suicide together in one book - but Indridason manages this with compassion and success. Whilst the country, the climate and the character possess an unremittinging sense of gloom he still achieves an enjoyable read. And it's pretty compulsive stuff interweaving mystics and murder in a mystery that unravels with skill and precision. His ability to use a simple overarching device - in this case - the near death of coldness in all of the cases, is clever and compulsive. I enjoy Indridason's books immensely but this is a cut above the last two and is a great model of how to plot interveaving stories into a compelling whole.
