3.0 out of 5 stars A very long-winded account
It has taken me three months to finish this book as I have found it very heavy going. It cannot be denied that Martin Pugh has extensively researched the subject to the point that if he could have included every cough and sneeze, I think he would. It has taken me three months to finish this book as I have found it very heavy going. It cannot be denied that Martin Pugh has extensively researched the subject to the point that if he could have included every cough and sneeze, I think he would. Names of the ladies' friends and associates kept being referred to but it was often difficult to remember where they had cropped up before and cross-referencing these people was difficult. The same was true with regard to the many politicians who they were involved with.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK - But try reading June Purvis for a better or counter perspective!, 11 April 2015

This account is worth reading, if for no other reason than to compare with other accounts of the suffragette movement. One must bear in mind at least two of the main theses of this author when it comes to the suffragette movement and the so called "radical" Pankhursts. 1) This author contends that the female right to vote only came about as a result of expanded male suffrage at the end of WW1 2) "Violent" feminists did not advance the cause of women, they did more harm.

For a balanced or at least a counter view of this, try June Purvis' biography of Emmeline Pankhurst.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Pankhursts, 31 Jan. 2012
This review is from: The Pankhursts: The History of One Radical Family (Paperback)
The reason I only give three stars for this book is because I bought it for referencing and not for reading. It was quite hard to pick out the information in this book because it is so specific so if you are looking for very detailed facts and evidence this would be a fantastic book. With many references to other texts it is easy to find extra information and Martin Pugh gives a fantastic and informative view of the legendary Pankhurst family.
