5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Insight, 20 May 1998
By A Customer
I have read all of Naomi Wolf's books and feel this is one of her best. Her knowledge and insight is truly astounding. She makes you wonder why we don't question or challenge the way women are perceived in modern society. She raises valid points that give credibility to the title, Fire with Fire. Great book ... I highly recommend it.

This review is from: Fire With Fire: New Female Power and How it Will Change the Twenty-First Century: New Female Power and How It Will Change the 21st Century (Paperback)
This is the first time I've read anything by Naomi Wolf and I am impressed. She is extremely knowledgeable not just about the USA but about the UK as well. She advocates women going out and changing things they don't like and reminds us that women are in the majority when it comes to voting in local and national elections. She is very critical of what she terms 'victim' feminism which simply complains about injustices and expects them to be corrected because women are suffering.

This is not man hating in any shape or form and is still relevant today 15 years after it was first published. It reminds women that power is there to be used and men don't have a monopoly on power but it also reminds them that they need to work with men rather than against them to improve equality for everyone. She suggests that people need to be taught at school and university about how to use power so that their opponents are not just hammered into the ground. Women are not used to seeing themselves in positions of authority and because women are brought up to try and be nice to everyone they find it difficult to be in charge.

Wolf does not believe that men are the only ones who commit crimes and quotes figures from the early 1990s showing that women commit nearly 50% of the child abuse in the USA. She does not try to hide the fact that women can be evil too. People who think feminism is not relevant in the 21st century would do well to read this book as would those who think feminism is about man hating and preferring your own sex. This is a well written, accessible and inspiring to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars encourages women to get up and do, not be done to, 2 Jun 2000

This review is from: Fire With Fire: New Female Power and How it Will Change the Twenty-First Century: New Female Power and How It Will Change the 21st Century (Paperback)
A brilliant reminder of how powerful women actually are. Encourages women to act powerfully, be visible, stop keeping each other down, and to claim what is rightfully ours. With a last chapter of possible and fun things to do. Made me think. A lot.
