This book is breathtaking in story, meticulous in detail and captivating in style. I could barely put it down after reading the first few pages. I am not Jewish nor am I Italian, but I do live in Italy and am tyring to understand the mentality of those around me. This book really helps.

The author, Alexander Stille, tells the stories of five Jewish families in Italy, during Fascism: how they reacted to it, and to racial laws and persecution.
This is a book of history, that can be read also as a collection of thriller stories.
It's well written, well documented and moved me in several occasion.
If you liked the works of Primo Levi, you'll like this as well.
I strongly recommend it.
