I would say that I love about 50% of Ms Jordan's novels, like about 20% and feel luke warm about the rest. This was a love for the storyline and the characters both. The plot had interesting twists and natural conflict from the English/Scottish rivalry of the time rather than strange invented conflict of many romances.

Niall McLaren is as dangerous and rugged as the Highlands from where he hails, skillfull in the arts of war and love. When Sabrina Duncan first sees him in a stately ballroom in Edinburgh he is brimming with sensuality, and luring bored wives onto deserted terraces. An understanding made between to clans long ago binds Niall to wed the eldest daughter of a neighbouring laird to unite the two. But when Niall recognizes Sabrina as the intriguing lass he espied in Edinburgh, the married life he never wanted becomes a new world to be explored. Of course in the wilderness and highland Scotland nothing is ever simple, with feuding clans and fiery tempers throw pebbles, stones and boulders into the path of

Sabrina irrepressible nature in her sudden marriage and unheaval to life in Scotland is lovely, no brooding here! Her determination is lovely and you really want her and Niall to succeed. Niall's nature grows on you as he comes to care for his bride and you see his feeling grow through his possessive actions that make your heart beat that bit faster.

The story progresses at a good rate, without parts that seem too rushed or that drag. You get involved and want to know what happens, while always being assured of the happy ending. If your expectiong a traditional regency romance then this isn't it. Set in Scotland, there are different problems and a different set of rules to regency England. If you haven't read a book by Ms. Jordan before and like your romances to be 'tame', this isn't for you either since there are more than one or two sex scenes. I haven't given 'The Lover' 5 stars since I felt that at time there was a depth missing to the story. It was a fun and enjoyable story that brightened a raining sunday.
