Madhur Jaffrey was recommended to me by an Indian friend as being pretty authentic so I purchased this bargain book as a taster (excuse the pun).

I was not disappointed. The recipes are pretty easy (some spice grinding is necessary for some, but not all the recipes) and the taste is really really good. I know that this is a book that I am going to work my way through one recipe at a time.

Buy it!

As ever Jaffrey's curry recipes are easy to follow and make fab dishes. Unfortunately Kindle is so difficult to navigate it is quite hard to look at the ingredients AND the instructions at the same time

As an avid food lover and a British Asian I was looking forward to trying out the dishes in this book of 'essential curries'. I decided on trying the Saag Paneer (Spinach with Paneer) recipe which to my initial horror stated that one would need 6tsps of oil compared to other recipes for the same dish which specify a much smaller amount of oil. However I justified continuing with the dish with the expectation that it would be extra tasty because of the additional oil even if it was unhealthy. The end result was disappointing, bland and tasteless with the realisation that there were some key ingredients missing from the recipe. I know what this dish can taste like and will be sticking to other recipes. This is the first Madhur Jaffery book that I have purchased and I was intending to buy some of her older classics. However based on this experience I will not be buying any more. There are much better Indian recipe books on the market that have recipes that are not 'half recipes', are tastier but healthier at the same time. Maybe the author has saved some of the best recipes for her other previous books or maybe not but at this moment in time I'm not willing to risk getting another recipe book that isn't truly authentic. My Kitchen Table: 100 Essential Curries
