This book is essentially a rework of Felix's other book How to Get Rich but in a more punchy, pithy and succinct format. It distils out the sage advice from the anecdotes. How to Get Rich is a much better book to read as it is the story of a journey. This book is the one that you can quickly flick through if you want to brush up on a particular point.

This book is not about making money so much as about practical ways of looking at how to make money. In the opening pages, author Felix Dennis (self-made millionaire publisher of Maxim and a slew of other publications) bemoans the reaction to his previous title, How To Get Rich. It became a best-seller, he says, because people thought it was just about getting rich, whereas he was trying to look at it from a different angle.

So it is with 88 - The Brief Guide To The Getting Of Money. This collection of short chapters covers a range of practical advice - most of which anyone can agree with. Some of Dennis's views on the rights and wrongs of how to do business are subjective and could perhaps be questioned but, overall, he is spot on.

If you want to "get money", the hardest lesson to learn, according to Dennis, is you have to be a bit of a selfish git. Being humble and generous will let other selfish gits walk over you towards the money that could otherwise be yours. If there's an overriding lesson that Dennis seems to want to put across, it is that, while anyone can make lots of money, not everyone can; and that there is no formula to follow for all people - only those determined to do what's necessary will make money.

From a business point of view, Dennis offers sensible advice to entrepreneurs. For example, when you raise money to start your business, the more you spend on fancy desks and furniture, the less profit you make. The bite-sized format of Dennis's musings make this an easy book to open on any chapter for a quick read.

As to whether he's right, well he's got lots of money hasn't he?

There is nothing really new in this book. Having said that the section 'On shortcuts' is bang on (there aren't any), and #88 'On success' might just be worth the price of the book in itself. Your reaction to that probably determines whether the narrow road is for you or not.

Brilliant book. I have read How to get Rich 6 times and it is a guiding light for me, this book just made order of the other one. I recommend reading How to get Rich first and then having this with you as your rulebook.

5.0 out of 5 stars 88 The Narrow Road (Felix Dennis), 25 Feb 2011
This review is from: 88 The Narrow Road: A Brief Guide to the Getting of Money (Hardcover)
I have never read a book that is a reference to running your business better than this, the chapters are two and three page hits of honest appraisal on things you need to know early in your career and things you should know later in your career.

Sadly most of us who run medium sized business's have learnt the hard way by making mistakes and paying dearly for them, myself included, I am still making mistakes at 50 especially with staff, there are a couple of bullit chapters on this in the book and you will curse yourself after you have read them because you already know the answer but FD reinforces the reasoning.

I have bought a couple of these and given them out to young entreprenuers in the hope they will gain good common sensde early on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Answering start-up questions - an understated bible, 22 Dec 2011
This review is from: 88 The Narrow Road: A Brief Guide to the Getting of Money (Hardcover)
Business-like, to-the-point, and yet not dull. Felix talks about tigers called 'Ambo' (Ambition) chained to your feet, hyenas in the boardroom and slaying dragons. And despite these far-off descriptions he brings home the realities faced on the road to riches. (He built a media empire that is still flourishing today - on four continents).

At first, I thought this book lacked flow. But the bullet-pointed style suits the modern lifestyle. In short bursts of concentration you can grasp many important messages. The lessons in the book carry the gravity of an experienced man, without any unnecessary addition of personal anecdotes.

Felix's key point is on the hypocrisy of the game of getting rich. Despite his cynicism to its benefits, he goes on to describe how to go about attaining wealth. Through ownership, other people's talent and tenaciously facing risk.

What differentiates this from other personal finance books? There are two things about the author: he has been there and done it, and he is an accomplished writer. He can convey his learnings better than your average entrepreneur. His collection of quotes reinforce the eternal value of his lessons.

Though, from afar, it may seem as an extended list of requirements for success there is chronology to his statements. He starts wide, advising about circumstance and then focuses in on specific aspects in the life of a start-up. He stays the course to tell you when to send-off of your company, giving a complete picture of the journey into, through and out past the 'narrow road'.

This book may kick you into action. It's entertaining yet I can see it yields answers to many start-up questions. Felix's wealth of knowledge and straight-forward approach makes this book an understated bible.
