3.0 out of 5 stars Chill out, Gina Ford!
I bought this book based on all the five-star reviews. I've got a ten year old and didn't use a book to wean him, but felt less confident with my four month old daughter, so thought I'd give this a book a try. I read through it when it arrived and just felt it all too regimented and strict. I know not all babies are the same, but it was all about exact timing and not...

5.0 out of 5 stars Weaning, 17 Dec 2002
By A Customer
As a first time mum I had only really got to grips with feeding my baby milk when people started talking about weaning. Anxious to get it right as my baby had always been a fussy eater, I bought every book on the subject and attended a 'weaning party' at my local health centre. Advice varied greatly so I decided to follow this book as it seemed very clear and it gives you a day by day plan to follow. This is especially helpful to get you started. I also found the information on when to introduce each type of food very useful and my baby is now enjoying a wide range of fruit and vegetables. I feel confident about when to try something new and am really enjoying my baby experiencing different foods. However, I have found that he eats more than is suggested in the book for his age as he is a big baby, so don't be frightened to give more or less as Gina suggests. I really like the plan as you give the milk directly followed by solids unlike other plans which suggest mid morning milk then lunch. I found the latter very restricting as it means you end up feeding more often. This is an excellent book and it has made weaning fun rather than stressful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beginning solids for beginners, 11 Nov 2002
This is a very useful book - whether or not you follow the routines that Gina Ford recommends in her 'Contented Little Baby Book'. In this book, Gina suggests menus for every step of the weaning process and explains the thinking behind introducing new foods so that the baby's digestive system is not overloaded and any intolerances are picked up at once. My 6 month old now enjoys a range of vegetables and fruit that would put a lot of adults to shame so, personally, I feel the book has done its job.

But.... there are some buts. Firstly, preparing homemade, organic food for every meal will not be an option for everyone, although you could still follow the eating plans with commercial food. Secondly, even if you do make food at home, not all of the ingredients are easy to find. I searched every major supermarket chain and a number of healthfood shops and none of them stocked 'baby barley'. None of the people I spoke to had even heard of it.

The third and final problem with this book is the editing, which is what lost the fifth star in my rating. As with 'The Contented Little Baby Book', there are inconsistencies. They don't stop the book being useful - but as you stand there with a hungry baby, trying to double check you've got things right, you need clarity! If Gina or her publisher ever reads this, please make sure that an editor goes through the next editions of both with a fine-toothed comb.

On balance, 'The Contented Little Baby Book of Weaning' is a helpful and useful book, especially for those of us new to motherhood and looking for some guidance. Be prepared to interpret the instructions though, as they will not be practical for everyone and could be presented more clearly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Weaning Guide I've Seen, 5 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Gina Ford excels yet again. I wish this book had been available when I was weaning my first baby.
In this book Gina takes you through a step by step guide to weaning your baby, from first purees through to finger foods and beyond. The instructions, recipes and advice are easy to understand, and Gina also suggests a two-weekly menu, for each weaning stage, as a guide to get you started.
I particularly liked the chapter which goes through all the different fruit, veg, and other food types. It tells you the nutritional content, and says at what age the baby can be introduced to them. It also gives suggestions on how to prepare and cook them.
Another bonus was that I found my baby, and toddler, liked far more of the recipes in Gina's book than in some of the other leading weaning books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chill out, Gina Ford!, 17 Mar 2004
I bought this book based on all the five-star reviews. I've got a ten year old and didn't use a book to wean him, but felt less confident with my four month old daughter, so thought I'd give this a book a try. I read through it when it arrived and just felt it all too regimented and strict. I know not all babies are the same, but it was all about exact timing and not about the fun of introducing your baby to the enjoyment and delight of food. Some of the book is invaluable, yes, but the stuff about if the baby takes too much solids at l1am it will affect the next milk feed made me feel terrified of giving her too much of her cube of carrot in case I threw her whole feeding regime into turmoil! Gina Ford needs to relax just a tad, I think! Food is a pleasure of life and your baby will develop as and when they need to, this book makes it all just a bit too serious for me. As long as you give them healthy organic food in a sensible manner and not rush them, surely that is a good introduction to solids? My ten year old loves food, vegetables included, and I put this down to a relaxed attitude to healthy eating and not a strict timetable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great guide - if you like detail, 5 Sep 2006
I found Gina Ford's Contented Little Baby Book far too rigid for my liking when my daughter was born (she is 6 months old now) and stayed well away. A more relaxed approach to life worked far better for us. That said, when it was time to introduce solids, her Contented Little Baby Book of Weaning was spot on - I really wanted a guide for exactly what, when and how much to introduce, and she certainly delivers ... which just goes to show that you do not have to be an all-singing-and-dancing Gina Ford devotee to appreciate her advice in specific areas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Contented Little Baby Book of Weanig., 13 Dec 2002
By F Burney (London) - See all my reviews
Get this book! It tells you everything you need to know and has lots of fantastic recipes which you can make in a matter of minutes and which my children finish every time. I have two children, everything went like clockwork with my daughter so when my son arrived and still had not slept through the night at 8 months I was beginning to feel desperate. I bought this book and within a week it had turned my life around. My son began to sleep through the night, my freezer was stocked with delicious meals for him and my daughter and I was feeling a million times better. The recipes are great and so easy, not like the fiddly, time consuming ones in the book I had been using before. I am convinced my son was not sleeping through because he was not getting the right amount of protein in his diet to see him through the night. In this book the recipes are balanced so that in each portion there is the right amount of protein and carbohydrate. Thank you Gina for everything, you do not know what a difference your book has made to all the family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wean with Confidence, 16 Dec 2002
Just when you might feel you are getting motherhood under wraps, weaning time approaches - leaving you feeling uncertain and doubtful - yet again! Not with Gina's latest book on step-by-step weaning. This book is a winner. It gives you healthy, easy recipes to use for your child starting from 4 months old all the way through to one year of age. The book starts with clear guidelines about when to wean, and the signs to look out for. It then takes you clearly through the 3 stages of weaning, with a final chapter on 12 months and over. Generally new tastes/ foods are introduced every 3 days in the routine, with a variety of fruit and vegetables being used in the first 2 months. Gina warns against introducing protein too early and the dangers of this. She also gives clear guidelines about structuring the milk feeds in conjunction with the introduction of solids. As baby gets older, the recipes are excellent for use with both baby and the family - making life simpler. Gradually the "tier" system of feeding is introduced, but not too quickly to prevent your child cutting back too early on the vital nutrition found in milk. As always, Gina has provided a virtual how-to "text book" which helps you a) keep your baby healthy b) contentedly in their routine and c) prevents them becoming fussy feeders and d) keeps you sane and sure you are doing the best you can for your child. The book is clearly written and well presented for quick and easy reference on a daily basis. Finally an A- Z of foods, their health benefits, how to buy and store, prepare and cook, is included. This book is yet another one of Gina's which is a MUST for all moms. I really don't know what I would have done without her. Her books are like gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book makes weaning a doddle!, 13 Jul 2007
My daughter is almost a year old now and loves food.....she has yet to refuse a single type of fruit or vegetable. She eats several types of fish, chicken, lamb etc...and I put it all down to following the guidelines in this book. Infact so far, as far as my experience of motherhood goes, I am most proud of what I've achieved in terms of weaning.

I am a healthcare professional and cannot fault the general advice given on weaning.

The guidelines for first stage weaning are very prescriptive and this is exactly what I needed! The recipes are foolproof and easy to prepare. Being a book addict, I have tried other baby weaning recipes but have ALWAYS come back to this book. A brilliant piece of work, I really can't recommend it highly enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent if you just want to be told what to do!, 21 Mar 2007
By rock review (Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
As a first time mum with a million things on my mind, I just wanted clear consise advice about how to introduce foods, in what quantities and when. I started weaning at 19 weeks on the advice of health visitor and begrudgingly bought this book as I wasn't impressed with the contented little baby book. I used this plan for the first two months with small adjustments here and there and found it invaluable, and even though I was not on her feeding plan I found it easy to incorporate into my routine. As soon as we moved to two meals a day my little lad started sleeping through the night and the advice for introducing protein was also fantastic. Now I just dip in to use the recipes as I've found my confidence but I would thoroughly recommend it.

One thing though, it gives alot of detail if you wean early, if you wean at 6 months following government guidelines then it is a little more vague and rushed as it's focusing on getting you on to proteins to make up for the depleting iron stores. I don't know if I would have thought it was as good as I do if I had waited till 6 months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the Tin., 28 Jan 2004
Before I started weaning my son I decided to read all the information and books I could find on the subject.

This is by far the best book I have read. My son is not a Gina Ford baby though I have found all her books to be interesting and helpful but this is the best of the lot.

If you are at all concerned about allergies, how to get started or have got started but are having problems this book can really help.

It literally is a plan for each day for the first year. Unlike in her other books Gina does state that this book is a guide as all babies have different appetites. So do bear this in mind.

We started off following the plans but my son soon got to grips with solids and we no longer follow them but other mums I know haven't found the babies too take to a spoon quite so quickly so the book is really working for them.

There is also a useful nutrition section giving the nutritional facts about various foods.

All in all I found the plans a bit boring but if you are going to read 1 book about weaning this should be it. It answers any questions you may have and even if you don't follow her plans you will still find the information interesting and informative.

Any parents that are really concerned about weaning could follow these plans and would never need to worry about weaning again.
