For a while Mark Thomas was regular fixture of my TV watching. His show would regularly pop up on TV and he would go onto inform and entertain us about some of the injustices we should all know about. ‘As Used on the Famous Nelson Mandela’ is a collection of some of these stunts including getting school kids to buy items of torture and tricking a group of arms dealers to pay for some of the damages done to Iraq. Thomas is a refreshing, if quite strong voice of opposition. His politics will divide and are biased, but then again he never claims otherwise.

What is important is whether ‘Famous’ continues to do what is shows did so well; inform and entertain. The book certainly does. Not only are the stories interesting, but they are well written and full of funny one liners. There is also an abundance of evidence on offer to support what he is saying. It is these elements that are possibly the most important part of the book, but also paradoxically the most boring. It is a shame, but a fact of life – details are vital, but also a little dull!

What I like most about Thomas is that he is not afraid for people to dislike him. His wit is sharp and most people feel a taste in the book. Some people will be outraged about what he says, but I think they should learn to grow a thick skin as he is the same way about almost everyone (with the most guilty parties getting most of the flack). Released in 2007, it is shame that little has altered in the intervening years, but as a look back on some of the hypocrisies within the New Labour Government this is a very informative and entertaining book.

In 1999 a poor Country (South Africa) announced plans to buy Frigates, jets and submarines, and this deal will be complete in the next few years to a cost of 6 billion dollars. And yet quite a few of the population (18%) in S.Afrca is Hiv postiive. And S.Africa has no official enemies. As the Americans say - "Go figure"

South Africas current president, the corrupt Jacob Zuma, was said to have been behind this 1999 deal when he agreed with big Arms Manufacturers (BAE included) and now Zuma is President of SA. Zuma was bribed when that 6 billion deal was made. Zuma ws charged with over 700 charges of fraud and corruption before he became President. Luckily for him the trial never reached its conclusion. Welcome to the African judicial system.

If like me you are a fan of Mark Thomas then you are on good, strong ground here. He takes on his subject like a super charged member of "Watchdog" and never shirks from asking the difficult and probing questions. The revelations are amusing, horrific and above all fascinating. I would also recommend his "Belching Out The Devil" about a well known soft drink too.
