Hmm....a let down.,
By Bronte May "Bronte" (Oxford) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Straight Up and Dirty (Paperback)
Was looking forward to reading this but was very very difficult to read however I didn't give up and went through to the end. It isn't very dirty, the character is just blunt. I wouldn't recomend this book, there are other books like this which are so much better.

It really is straight up and dirty,

I liked reading this book. It was a quick and easy summer read and it's nice to read something fluffy once in a while. If you've ever read her blog, I'd definetly recommend this book to you because you can finally get the full story. If you like chick-lit (I hardly ever do) I think that you'll like this book too because it is mostly about relationships and a girl living it up in the city. But if you're looking for something more, something thought-provoking or emotion-stirring, I'd suggest you look somewhere else.

Oh my god,
By Abbymo "abbymo" (Hampshire) - See all my reviews

I was looking forward to reading this - having read diary of a manhatten call girl I thought this may be in the same vein. I was very dissapointed - the writing is very difficult to follow, flipping from present to past all the time without imparting any particular information. I have only made it to the fifth chapter and I am so bored I don't know if I will carry on...

I'm a guy and I liked this book!,

I read this book by accident. My girlfriend in London left it here when she was visiting, and I started to casually leaf through the pages. I was captivated by the witty observations and surreal circumstances. Ms. Klein has a gift of analysing the obvious and bizarre, then presenting it in a humorous but heartwarming way. Zipped through it in just a few days. Highly recommend.

My book club can't stop talking about STRAIGHT UP & DIRTY,
By Messy (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Straight Up and Dirty (Hardcover)
Ok, maybe it isn't so much a book club as a reason for me and 15 friends to get together at Vibe Bar and drink but we chose to pick up Stephanie Klein's STRAIGHT UP & DIRTY to have a drinking discussion of it. First, I was pleasantly surprised. This girl can write. She is sassy, creative and most of all human. My friend Gretchen thinks we should invite her to our next get together to go through the torment she describes about her failed marriage and what she did to take stock in herself. My suggestion is pour yourself a drink and spend some time with this quick reading yet detailed account.

Yum,

Treat this book like a cappuccino; as a lovely but slightly guilty pleasure. Dive through the froth and you're left with a bloody good read, but don't dive through the froth that stuffs great as well. Would have got five stars if I had read it on the beach, preferably The Hamptons.

I started reading this book but the writing style was so arduous and the subject matter so depressing that I went back to reading Proust.

This book helped me,
This review is from: Straight Up and Dirty (Hardcover)
I read the "Mystery girl" review and wondered what book he/she read. This book was not at all about someone's desperate attempt to snag a husband. They must be talking about some other book. Straight Up & Dirty was smart, well written and facile. My heart goes out to Stephanie Klein. Her book, like her blog is an open display of her emotion, experiences and feelings. At times she punishes herself. Other times she makes the tough decsion but the power of this book is in the resurrection. I gave this book to my husband who read it and replied "I appreciate what we have" and kissed my cheek.

such a let down!,
By why the hype? (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Straight Up and Dirty (Hardcover)
I was so excited about this book I ordered it from england so I could read it first thing! (it's not out here yet until next week). This was barely readable- the writing is all over the place. More importantly, it's not even an exciting or interesting story. The dates and interactions with men that were so hyped are nothing. It's like sex and the city- the PG version. So boring.

I very much enjoyed Straight Up and Dirty. Stephanie Klein's unique insights came through in this memoir. I cringed at the mother in law, laughed with her friends and became short of breath during the abortion chapter. That is what good writing is to me. It is not debatable whether Stephanie Klein is a good writer- a Barnard graduate with a degree in writing, big publishing first class editors. The question is if the memoir is relateable. I was drawn in by the descriptions and the feeling. This is the kind of book I want to read over again and get something new out of it.
