Solid introductory text which is well written
on 31 January 2014
Given that I was doing self-study I needed an introductory text which was exceptionally well written given I had no other support. From personal experience, slogging through a poorly written dry text with on an unfamiliar subject is a recipe for failure, this edition is anything but that. It covers the subject matter thoroughly, but takes time to explain concepts in a skilful way which makes learning much more effective and interesting.
Uses good examples, is well structured with concepts introduced simply, then gradually expanded in complexity and has commentary to complete each learning section. Academic concepts are covered as well as accompanying practicalities, therefore the text prepares the student for the 'real world' realities as well as the theory of each problem.
My only gripe is the on-line resource - I'm sure this is good for students on a taught course with diligent tutors packing their portal with good stuff. For me it was just a few odd pdf's, a multiple choice thing and some appendices; the poor quality videos were gimmicky and the sound kept cutting-out. All-in-all pretty useless really. To be any good it needs audio lectures with the presentations and exam database with solutions. To make matters worse my registration card was missing on my paper copy (bought new from Waterstones) so I paid twice for this bit, and paid again for the Kindle edition so I could read on my commute, but it had no online capability with it. Very annoyed. Just register each copy sold, and no loose cards, they fall out / students nick them!
An annoying expense, and unnecessary really, as one doesn't really need additional materials as the main text is so good. Hit that hard and you don't need flowery media to 'help' understand.
