4.0 out of 5 stars Overall rather good, 28 July 2013
This review is from: Complete Serbian: From Beginner to Intermediate [With 400 Page Book] (Teach Yourself: Language) (Paperback)
This book and accompanying two CDs was my introduction to learning Serbian, and I'm lucky I chose this course and not the similarly sized and priced Colloquial course (which I have reviewed separately under that product listing) to begin with. The course is rationally laid out, with well-structured teaching of difficult Serbian grammar, and logical introduction of useful words for the beginner expanding as the book progresses. The book and CDs sensibly concentrate on the main ekavian dialect, without getting distracted by the less common yekavian dialect (commoner in Croatia and Bosnia) which happens in the rival Colloquial course (an intermediate or advanced course would be a more appropriate place for this). The book helpfully alternates between western and cyrillic alphabets so that the beginner practises both - and there is even an illustration of how to write cyrillic in cursive which I found useful.

Serbian is a difficult language, and some of the lessons have to be taken slowly because they teach so much new material. You have to be patient and continually revise and consolidate. All the passages in the textbook have corresponding audio on the CDs which is helpful. I felt that the last lesson was disappointingly short/curtailed in its audio component, but overall this is a good course, and definitely the one I'd recommend to the new beginner.

Good book and audio, but needs to have the conjugation of verbs organised earlier in the book. E.g. It could benefit from grouping the full conjugation of verbs
