5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I needed to get MCITP Database Developer
Having started working with SQL Server 2005 about 4 months ago as a complete newbie, I decided to start studying for formal qualifications to back up the knowledge I was gaining from using the product on a day-to-day basis.

This book does in fact cover everything you need to know to pass the three exams required to obtain MCITP Database Developer Certification...

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware MISSING PAGES
When I received this book, I immediately got down to study for the exams, only to find there are 49 missing pages from this book. They haven't been torn out or have fell out, there just not there, so beware.

This review is from: MCITP SQL Server 2005 Database Developer All-in-One Exam Guide (Exams 70-431, 70-441 & 70-442): Exams 70-431, 70-441 and 70-442 (Hardcover)
Having started working with SQL Server 2005 about 4 months ago as a complete newbie, I decided to start studying for formal qualifications to back up the knowledge I was gaining from using the product on a day-to-day basis.

This book does in fact cover everything you need to know to pass the three exams required to obtain MCITP Database Developer Certification. You will have to have practical experience using the product (ie, using the various GUI elements of SQL Server Management Studio). The exams really help to learn the intricacies of SQL Server and a lot of the processes to pinpoint problems and enhance performance. If you use this book in addition to actually using the product (I recommend you actually do all the practical exercises listed in the book using the recommended SQL Server 2005 Evaluation edition) you will have no problem passing the exam.

The book is very well laid out - each chapter is very distinct and specifically states what parts of the chapter relate to specific exams. In addition the appendices detail each exam and a list of all required topics and their locations in the book so that you have an easy-reference guide of what to study for a particular exam. Each chapter also ends with a list of 5-10 questions specific to each exam to help determine if you've understood the material.

Don't forget that the 70-431 exam now includes a number of simulation questions which aren't covered by the book so make sure you understand what those involve prior to taking the exam.

Overall, this is the size and cost of ONE of the official Microsoft Study Books and teaches you what you need to know for the exam in a very easy to understand, pragmatic way without bogging down in unnecessary detail.

I've decided to start working towards the MCITP Database Administrator certification and will be picking up Darril Gibson's All-in-one book for that on the back of my experience of using this one for Database Developer. Very Highly Recommended!
