5.0 out of 5 stars Well structured and great value
This is a well paced and excellently structured text that strikes a really good balance between concise explanations, proofs and lots of well worked examples (plus additional questions).
You may be tempted to skip the first handful of chapters but it's worth working through them all and practicing to get the most out of it.
For the price I can't fault it...

This book is good at explaining some things and includes information on basically every topic in a first year calculus course. However there is often much useful information lacking meaning if you are meeting something for the first time this book is little use. For the price though definitely worth a buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Calculus Revisited, 9 July 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Schaum's Outline of Calculus, 5ed: Schaum's Outline of Calc, 5ed (Schaum's Outline Series) (Paperback)
I studied calculus in the 1960s for A Level GCE Pure Maths, Applied Maths and Physics. The subject was badly taught in most schools, as was not uncommon in those faraway days. I suspect that many of the maths teachers may not have understood (other than superficially) the subject they were teaching. Nonetheless, I, like many others students, succeeded at A Levels despite the bad teaching. I decided some months ago to revisit the topic of calculus, just out of interest. How teaching methods (as revealed by the three books I bought from Amazon) have changed, very much for the better! Schaum's Outline has lots of worked examples, and excellent explanations. If only Schaum had been available to us in the 1960s, how much more enjoyable calculus could have been.

It probably sits somewhere between A-Level and undergraduate level, and I found it invaluable as a refresher text now that those days are a more distant memory!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent source of solved problems, but lacking fully-worked solutions for supplementary problems, 25 July 2009
This review is from: Schaum's Outline of Calculus, 5ed: Schaum's Outline of Calc, 5ed (Schaum's Outline Series) (Paperback)
This book's primary value is as a source of solved calculus problems. Although a concept discussion precedes each set of solved and supplemental problems, these discussions are extremely short, sometimes just a brief paragraph before problems are presented. The primary value of these discussions will be as a concise review for those already familiar with the areas covered.

Each of the fifty-nine chapters includes: 1) brief concepts discussions, 2) solved problems with fully-worked solutions, and 3) supplementary problems. The solved problems are excellent, providing a wide and comprehensive coverage of undergraduate calculus. However, the supplementary problems only provide answers, not fully worked solutions. Thus, readers who do not get matching answers may find it difficult to determine how the problem should be solved, Even if correct answers are obtained readers cannot be certain they approached the problem solution in the most appropriate manner. Thus, the supplemental problems provide little additional value beyond the traditional odd-numbered problems in typical class texts, for which answers without detailed solution steps are usually provided.

As with some other books of calculus problems, there are deficiencies in the solution approach to word problems involving dimensions. For example, in Chapter 20 although dimensions are given in the problem statements, the authors change to 'pure numbers' during the problem solution phase, leaving off dimensions until the final solution. This means there's no check that dimensions are being properly used during the problem solving process. The use of dimensionless numbers can make work 'cleaner', but it may also mask wrong answers. It always means that an additional check on the validity of a solution is missing. Also, as is common with many paperback review books, the paper appears to be low quality; some of my Schaum's editions less than a decade old are already starting to brown.

If your need is for first year calculus, you may also want to look at 'AP Calculus' preparation books. These typically have somewhat more detailed discussions, as well as fully-worked solutions to all problems.

Considering the relatively minor changes in this edition compared to the previous fourth edition, it may be worth considering that edition as an option, if you can obtain it at significantly reduced cost.

In summary, this edition is an outstanding source of solved calculus problems at a quite reasonable price, with only some minor deficiencies and omissions.

5.0 out of 5 stars grows your math skills, 6 Mar 2011
This review is from: Schaum's Outline of Calculus, 5ed: Schaum's Outline of Calc, 5ed (Schaum's Outline Series) (Paperback)
I know these books already for a very long time: from "learning from it" to "teaching from it", and I will now buy them for my very own son.
These are not the standard mathematical text books, but they are highly useful didactical tools for teaching to young people that still need to acquire specific mathematical skills:
1. Understand basic notions and be able to reproduce proofs;
2. Apply and use the acquired knowledge and insight by resolving realistic mathematical problems.
The strongest point of Schaum's are the large quantities of resolved problems, showing students (and professionals, lol) how to deploy theory. Students are not being tortured by just hitting them with numerous problems, but they're also shown "the way out". Study from these books and be sure to pass your exam.
