Master the Cast : Fly Casting in Seven Lessons,
This review is from: Master the Cast: Fly Casting in Seven Lessons (Paperback)
This book is in a class of its own, it is a facinating read for those fly fishers that are interested in the mechanics of the casting action. It is also a very useful guide and companion for those that are or already have chosen the vocation of professional fly casting instructors. This book explains all manner of casting techniques in supreme detail, and also how to go about correcting faults that already exsist within your casting technique. However if you are a novice or beginner, then you might find some of the detailed explanations of the casting mechanics a little dry or difficult to understand fully. I personally find this book extremely useful as I am striving not only to improve my own technique, but wish to become a casting instructor myself. All in all, a fantastic book and an excellent read, I would highly recommend this to others- four stars.

Like any reference work (or text book) one has to concentrate on every word that is written in this book and then go over it again as many times as is necessary for the message to sink in - and then get out your fly rod and practice. I would recommend the use of a highlighter to emphasise the key phrases in order to enable you to lift out of the text those parts that are particularly important to you as an individual, even at the expense of defacing it. This is after all a learning tool, not a classical work that requires appropriate reverence.I too am endeavouring to become a qualified game angling instructor, but very quickly realised after day one of the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling Course (run by the Salmon and Trout Association here in the UK) that I attended, that my technical casting knowledge was woefully inadequate. The course (perhaps surprisingly) does not teach casting or how to teach casting, so I am now in the process of putting this right and learning (in depth) about this critical game angling skill - and Hey Presto, here is part of the answers to my prayers. (The other part is taking lessons from an established master caster!) A word of warning; I would suggest that you pace yourself through this book, take it a step at a time, and don't try to rush on to the next bit before you have fully assimilated each stage.

being possibly the lowest priced book on the subject out there, the contents come as a bit of a surprise, for beginners its thorough, for intermediates there is extra detail and it goes further, much more than the same old mechanical instruction, one of the few books or dvd's that actually does help in practice.up there with joan wulf's, superb book.

This book covers the mechanics of fly casting in great detail. So much detail you could fall asleep reading it. If you do then pick it up and read it again. It is the best book on fly casting I have ever read. If you can take this information with you to the waters edge and work to put it into practice your casting will improve no end. For me, it embodies the essence of what a good cast is and what it means to you as a fisher. I honestly believe it would appeal to novice or experienced anglers alike. A useful reference book which should prove invaluable as you strive to perfect your cast. Tight Lines.

Unbelievable Value,
This review is from: Master the Cast: Fly Casting in Seven Lessons (Paperback)
This book represents unbelievable value. I have seen a number of DVDs on casting, I have even enjoyed one to one professional casting tuition, but I would not like to be without "Master the Cast". Not only does the author tell the reader what to do in great detail, but just as important, he explains in the same meticulous detail, the reasons why, and also the mechanics of the action. Furthermore he will often repeat an instruction but each time in a slightly different way, thus ensuring the reader fully understands before moving on. Before reading this book I would have said that one cannot learn casting from a book but "Master the Cast" has certainly changed that opinion. In fact I would suggest that this book should be on every fly-fisherman's shelf as it is an invaluable reference, and one which can be read over and over again.

Master The Cast,

This review is from: Master the Cast: Fly Casting in Seven Lessons (Paperback)
This is THE book on fly casting. Everything's here, however it's not particularly well written and extracting the information is hard work. But if you're determined enough, and can persevere with the author's impenetrable style, then you'll put yards on your cast.
