5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for the novice fly fisherman......
This is a very good book for the novice fly fisherman.I have read many fly fishing books ,but this one I feel is the best one. Everything is put down in simple form to make it very easy for the beginner to understand. There are many pictures also to show step by step procedures that are explained. The section on leaders I found very helpfull, showing with pictures and...

After reading the other reviews I was expecting a lot from this book. The focus on US fly fishing is noted by others and whilst the idea of fishing rivers is hugely attractive (to me at least), most of my opportunities are on still waters and I think this is fairly common in the UK. So great chuncks of this book are not relevant for me and I wish I'd understood this downside better before buying. There is very little on how to fish still waters, let alone the seasonal differences, and some of the technical content seems either very 'purest' or slightly out of touch with modern methods and thinking. Take what I say with a pinch of salt if you like - I AM very new to this sport - but I'm still on the lookout for a book with more content on still water fishing tactics: how to fish dries, wets, nymhs, buzzers and lures; instruction on the use of floating, intermediate and sinking lines; the use of fluorocarbon and/or copolymer leaders etc. and has fewer pages devoted to recounting experiences of fly fishing in the good ol' US of A, attractive as it all sounds. Mind you, reading-up on how to cast is vastly surpassed by a visit to YouTube and a trip to the local park! Happy fishing, tight lines and all that.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book to get you hooked on the sport, 11 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Book of Fly Fishing (Paperback)
My only complaint of this book is that it concentrates on Fly fishing in America with Tom McNally waxing lirical about fishing in the "East" or the "West". However the stories he tells are great to read and overall it is a very comprehensive book on the whole subject of Fly Fishing. Worth a read

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and intermediate flyfishers., 11 April 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Book of Fly Fishing (Paperback)
The explosive growth of flyfishing is due to many things, not the least of which is the depth and breadth of well-conceived instructional material. There are many more good books available today than in years past, and McNally's book is a case in point.
"The Complete Book of Flyfishing" does many things well. It gives the first time, fledgling flyfisher a basic overview of the equipment, tactics, and methods by which they can become proficient in the sport. There is also a depth and breadth of information in McNally's book that explains well many of flyfishing's harder techniques and methods. All in an easy to read format that leaves the reader wanting more.
Some instructional books effectively transfer information without adequately explaining the reasons why traditions and methods have evolved and are recommended. McNally gives more than just a "how to" treatise. He explains the rationale behind his choice of material, technique and equipment choices.
If a friend asked the best method to learn the basics of flyfishing I'd have no hesitation in recommending "The Complete Book of Flyfishing" by McNally as an outstanding guide.
Intermediate flyfishers will also find many interesting items in the book. McNally's section on knots is a prime example. Many have fished for years without a good working knowledge of the knots needed to fish properly. McNally provides first class illustrations for all the basic and tertiary knots. Sections on leader design and composition are also outstanding. I've never seen a better exposition on leaders anywhere.
If you are looking for a well-written text on all aspects of flyfishing pick up a copy of McNally's book. You will reach for it often.

This book is well written and I am sure comprehensive, although I cannot really tell because it is based entirely on fishing in the USA. It therefore has little relevance to UK buyers (like me).

3.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but very American and not quite up to date, 1 May 2010

This is a very good fly fishing book. However, it is in black and white (except for a few glossy colour pages in the middle, like a 1950s book) so it looks a little dull. It is very American so some things don't quite apply in the UK. It was last updated in 1997 so some of the gear advice etc is slightly out of date. However, overall it is a lot of book for the money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware printing errors, 18 May 2008
This review is from: The Complete Book of Fly Fishing (Paperback)
Chapters 7&8 were repeat printed (but 3 pages short) and chapters 9&10 were completely missing!

I also agree with other comments in that it is US based and very difficult to get to the information required (ie: how to started quickly) - too verbose!
