Having read the story of Maria that inspired the sound of music and seeing the disparity between the book and the film, I was very interested to learn that Agatha Von Trapp was very unhappy about the film, so wrote this book to give a factual account of their lives, especially that of her Father Captain Georg Von Trapp, whom she felt was wrongly portrayed in the movie as cold, aloof and detached. This book is warm hearted and shows the inspirational lives of this beloved family, spanning the times with their beloved mother, before her death to when Maria came into the picture; then their departure from Austria not by crossing the Alps into Switzerland, but by simply crossing the road and entering a train to Italy for their concert tour. Also contained in the book is their singing tour of europe and America with copies of some of the programmes, then to their settlement in Vermont. There is a chapter on what they did after they stopped singing, what became of each of them. There is also a chapter on her feeling about the movie, the fiction and the facts and how she came to term with the movie in the end. I have enjoyed reading this book and would reccommend it to all.

I found this book more interesting that The Trapp Family - the life story. Agathe was able to be a bit more honest - although again I think she was at times economical with the truth.

Fräulein von Trapp has woven a colourful tale of her family's story, giving us an insight into life before her famous stepmother joined them and also bringing us right up to date in the 21st century to the real von Trapps' reconciliation with their Hollywood counterparts. It's a lovely balance to Baroness von Trapp's original version of her family story and also Rogers and Hammerstein's dramatisation of their lives in Salzburg. It's a touching and heartwarming book with a simple faith in G-d shining through.

I have really enjoyed this book and, although I have loved the film 'Sound of Music', it is very interesting to read the actual autobiography of Agathe von Trapp and also to see photos of the family and her illustrations are great too.

Agatha is very keen to portray the true version of her family, particularly her father Georg Von Trapp. She presents as being irritated by the Sound of Music movie version of her family and wrote this book to set the record right. Her version is perhaps more interesting than the movie - but would not have sold seats like the R and H version.
