5.0 out of 5 stars The Wild Marquis, 22 Jun 2010
This review is from: The Wild Marquis (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an excellent holiday read. A who-dunnit combined with some good sex and beautifully costumed glamour, and a serious insight into antiquarian book dealing in the early nineteenth century. Story telling at its best, and a page turner to a final happy outcome.

It's unusual for the heroine of a historical romance such as this to be in trade - more so that she's the widow of a bookseller and still runs a bookshop. But there's more to Juliana Merton than a dowdy bibliophile, as the Marquis of Chase discovers when he asks her to help him buy back a family treasure, a particular book.

Chase (or Cain as he's known to his friends) is also not quite what he seems. Everyone knows he's a shocking rake, but as Juliana gets to know him she sees a different side, and as the story progresses we begin to understand how his reputation has developed.

There are a couple of mysteries in this story, although they take second place to the interactions between Chase and Juliana. I very much enjoyed the interactions between the two and the way in which we slowly uncover Chase's true nature - which is very appealing. Some of the characters were perhaps a little too eccentric at times, such as Chase's mother and one of the other book collectors, but overall it was an interesting look into the world of the book collector and the life of someone from the middle classes - or so we believe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too much of a bad thing could be good for you?, 30 Mar 2010
This review is from: The Wild Marquis (Mass Market Paperback)
Thw Wild Marquis is funny, romantic and thrilling. Juliana never backs down from an argument with the Marquis of Chase. The very wicked 'Cain' (Marquis of Chase) never backs down from his seduction of Juliana. And the combination of murder, illegitimacy (or not) and the Marquis's relationship with his deceased father keeps readers on tenterhooks for most of the book.

A great book which makes the reader want to try to work out all the twists before the characters do. I think Quarto was quite possibly my favourite character with Cain and Juliana a close second & third.

Recommended reading for anyone who likes to see a woman succeeding in a man's world(!) and making a rake reform (a little bit).
