5.0 out of 5 stars A Poet Far Ahead Of His Time
I adore Rthur Rimbaud. His poetry is so deep and penetrating. He is candid and honest to the point of being brutal. I love his observation and commentary about the religion of his day (and ours) that puts the material riches, accessories and ritual before the flesh and blood of the congregation. Upside down and wrong way round if one is to believe Christ, The Prophets and...

2.0 out of 5 stars Clunky translations
Whilst the book is good for providing his entire works and selected letters at a good price, the language is too clunky for most of the time. Wyatt Mason's translations seem to be a lot more flowing and capture the mood better. For example Mason's translation for 'Novel' (the name chosen for his translation) here [...] is a lot more atmospheric than Schmidt's take on it...

I adore Rthur Rimbaud. His poetry is so deep and penetrating. He is candid and honest to the point of being brutal. I love his observation and commentary about the religion of his day (and ours) that puts the material riches, accessories and ritual before the flesh and blood of the congregation. Upside down and wrong way round if one is to believe Christ, The Prophets and The Martyrs. "Le Mal" ("Evil") is my favourite of his poems.

In loving memory of the wonderful Arthur Rimbaud, The Eternal Youth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting journey into the twisted mind of Arthur Rimbaud., 4 April 1999
By A Customer
A book for anyone who enjoys good writing. Filled with life and fantastic imagery, the only thing lacking in this collection are the original versions in French. Other than that, the translations are excellent, so much that one forgets that the poems were originally written in another langauge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rimbaud as a living imagination of life, 17 April 1999
By A Customer
I've read this book in Turkish. Then in English. I think Rimbaud is still the future of poetry. If you are looking for something to hold on to, you should have a look at this book. There is nothing but pure life, smell of the colors and eyes of the light which swows us the meaning. For we can make it bigger. That is what Rimbaud has done. That is what todays poetry and i am looking for i think.

3.0 out of 5 stars but it's not rimbaud, 26 Oct 2000
By A Customer
and as good as it maybe, the reason rimbaud is the name he is today is the quality of the original poems not as a translation. find a copy with mathcing original texts and only get this if you fancy reading someones else's interpretation.
