As a frequent traveller to NYC I have used this guide in its various editions for fifteen years. It has never failed me. Sensibly laid out, easy to use, easy to navigate with and crammed full of interesting and useful highlights, this book beats all the other guides I have blown my money on. Its index is broken down into hotels, eateries, and stores/general interest, making it simple to look up. There are many useful snippets of knowledge, hints, tips, and lists of highlights from residents. Once you've tired of the tourist highlights (all dealt with thoroughly here), you can always find something new and interesting to visit, shop at, or eat in this book's pages.
The book's maps, subway guide, and travel hints are the most sensibly laid out of any NYC guide book. Each location highlighted comes with directions.
One minor quibble: like most guide books it concentrates on Manhattan, and its coverage of the Outer Boroughs is sketchy (but still very useful).
